Amanda Stoner

Amanda Stoner Poster web Alsara Clinic has been a great answer to my problems. And I was at my breaking point.

I came to Alsara Clinic because I was having some difficulty with my legs. They were very swollen and itchy and I had tried for two years everything from topical creams, shots, different types of medications, and nothing was getting rid of it. So I came here as a last resort to see if there was anything that Dr. Gupta could do for me.

When I came to Alsara for my mapping experience, I was very excited, and the tech that did my ultrasound was very friendly. When I had my procedure done, the room was very comfortable. I was able to relax and rest, and knowing that the staff was going to take care of me. Dr. Gupta came in and explained the procedure, and it went very well.

Since treatment, I don’t have any of those symptoms at all. I can work my bartending job and be on my feet all day and I don’t get that tired feeling anymore. I don’t have the aches; I don’t have the itching; I don’t have any of those urges anymore. I’m very thankful. And I can walk. The day that it was done, I didn’t stop going to work. I didn’t sit around the house. I stayed active. A week later, it’s like it never happened.

The staff here are amazing. They’re always nice and friendly, above and beyond; whether it was questions or assistance. I was having trouble getting compression socks in St. Joe, so the staff called around to Kansas City, and about the seventh place, they were able to locate a place that I could go to get the supplies that I needed. They could’ve just said, ‘you’re just going to have to order them and wait three or four days’. I didn’t want to have to wait. They go above and beyond, and that starts with your receptionist clear through to the techs, and definitely Dr. Gupta. I’m very blessed to have come here and had the treatment done.

I plan on taking my son to Disneyland next month, and as soon as the other leg heals, I’ll go get some capris and we’re going to go to the beach!

For anybody that has any type of Restless Leg Syndrome, spider veins, varicose veins, swelling, edema, anything, it’s a free consultation so why not try and see if Dr. Gupta can help you. Even for someone without insurance, the treatments are definitely affordable. It’s worth it. It will change your life.

Amy Hallquist

Amy Hallquist Poster web The symptoms that I had is I was struggling with varicose veins since I was in high school, and they just progressively got worse. I was having lots of swelling in my - it was mainly my right leg - I was having lots of swelling in it. Walking, it was throbbing, and I just could not tolerate much, I mean, being in an upright position very much.

I was pregnant with both of my children and ended up having blood clots with my first child, and then I had vein stripping after each pregnancy. And the vein stripping procedure was just very painful, and I wasn’t really wanting to do it again. But then, 10 years later, I was having increased problems again and decided it was time to do it. So I had seen a where this place was doing the laser and I thought ‘well, I'm going to give it a try’ and see if it was any better.

It affected my daily routines. I finally started wearing compression garments, which helped, but still by the end of the day, they were tired and sore and throbbing. And if I was up walking a lot during the day, which I do anyway with my job, then they were just swollen and throbbing and very heavy and painful.

I was feeling nervous about coming through and doing it again because the vein stripping procedure was such a hard procedure to go through. And so I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go through anything like that again. But I knew that I couldn’t continue to have the heavy leg syndrome and just being in pain every day, so I was really kind of questioning whether laser could take care of it because I had to have the vein stripping before, so I was really kind of second-guessing whether it would even work.

I felt very comfortable after meeting Dr. Gupta. He was very calm and easy to understand, and he explained the whole procedure; explained what was going on in our vein system, um, very compassionate man. I’m just very pleased that I was able to meet him, and I was just really pleased with how he presented himself and how he presented what was was wrong, you know, what could be wrong with me. I hadn’t had the ultrasound done yet, but, just explaining the process of how veins work, so I was very comfortable with staying here and having the procedure.

Everyone was so friendly and inviting and caring. I didn’t feel out of place at all. The atmosphere was just really nice. It was a really pretty office. It was nicely kept clean. So I just really enjoyed walking in the door.

The staff is very friendly and very warming, and I just felt very comfortable coming in here and doing anything with payments or just getting my appointments. It’s easy. They call me to remind me of appointments, and I just can’t say enough about the staff. They’re fantastic people.

I was very pleased to find out that insurance did cover it.

The treatment and recovery were very easy, very good. After the procedure here, I was able to go right back to work, walk, do anything that I was wanting to do. I was very happy with the treatment afterward. The recovery was extremely fast versus the stripping. I was up and going the same day, whereas the stripping, I was down for almost a week and in a lot of pain. I just had mild discomfort during the procedure and that was it. I was up and out walking, and I was surprised that I was able to get out and going that fast.

Now, I can travel, I can fly, and I don’t have any pain at all or any increased swelling right now. [I’m] just ready to enjoy my life and get out there, and I’m extremely grateful for Alsara Clinic.

I am very grateful for finding Dr. Gupta. I feel like I have more freedom in my life. I can go out. I can work out. I can run without feeling the heaviness in my leg or increased swelling. I was extremely surprised by how the procedure went and how easy it was to do, and how much better I felt at the end. So I am very pleased with Dr. Gupta and his staff, with the procedure. And I would highly recommend if you have any kind of vein issues just to come in and get it checked out.

I would highly recommend anyone with a vein problem to come to Alsara Clinic to get it checked out and get a recommendation on how to help them. I mean, it’s a fantastic place and I can’t say how much I appreciate everything that they have done for me. To know that there is hope out there – that there is a procedure that does not include stripping of the veins – is fantastic. I mean, I’m extremely happy that I came.

It has made a difference in my journey just because now I can get out, and I can go to all of my children’s sporting events, and walk around all day and not have increased swelling in my leg. When I get home, it’s not throbbing. I can continue to come home and do my laundry, and clean the house, and do everything that I can do. I’m not sitting down and trying to prop my leg up, saying that ‘hey, I have to get off it’. Whereas, before, if I had activities all day long, I would be going home and elevating my leg ‘til the throbbing would go away. Now, I can go to all the sporting events, come home, maybe go work out, or come home and finish all my house activities, and I am feeling great.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a medical condition in which the veins in the body are unable to pump oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart, often resulting in chronic swelling in the legs.

How is CVI related to Varicose Veins?

Refluxing Vein AnimationAs varicose vein symptoms worsen, there is increased backflow (reflux) of blood, which causes swelling in the ankles, feet, and legs. This is followed by discoloration around the ankles and feet. Left untreated, this may result in stasis dermatitis (dry, flaky rash), phlebitis (blood clots), and ulcers (skin sores).

Due to increased pressure of blood in the legs, even a minor injury may result in profuse bleeding. Poor circulation may cause frequent skin infections and sores that do not heal.

Alsara Vein Clinic offers venous insufficiency treatment.

Varicose Vein Treatments are coved by insurance including Medicare and Medicaid

Dad, I want a Charley Horse too!

My 9-year-old daughter recently had a major change in her career plans, from wanting to be a mermaid to being a Physician. I am still trying to find similarities between the two professions to better understand what led to this “slight” change in the career path for her. Some rightly said that children are like mirrors; they reflect all that they see and hear. Perhaps she sees the difference that our work has made in the lives of many including her teachers who came seeking care. I am certain that the stories of numerous patients have impacted her. For instance, hearing that several of my patients have “charley horses”, it was only natural for her to request one… “Dad, I would like one (charley horse) too!”

Although charley horse is a commonly used term for cramps in the leg, typically in the calf muscles, I was curious to learn about the origin of the term. There is a debate about the origin of the nickname. According to one source, there was a lame horse named Charley whose work was to help move things around a baseball park. The picture of the limping horse was so deeply entrenched in memories of the ballplayers that they started referring to each other as “charley horse” if they pulled a leg muscle or developed any minor impairment in their legs. Since the 1880s, the slang word lingered and is now commonly used to describe a sudden tightening or contracting sensation that lasts a few seconds to several hours and can be painful as well as debilitating.

charley horse cartoonThe dreaded charley horse is reported to affect up to 60 percent of adults who have reported the presence of nocturnal leg cramps in the form of a painful spasm, tightening of calf muscles, and twinges. Numerous causes of charley horses have been described in the medical literature including muscle fatigue, dehydration, mineral deficiency, and poor circulation (venous insufficiency).

During the initial stages, it is a good idea to gently massage the affected areas and use over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen.

confuciusThere are some easy ways to help prevent charley horses including staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, avoiding excessive sugars and caffeine, and avoiding overexertion.

There are numerous old wives’ tales about home remedies from drinking pickle juice, using quinine, to the use of a bar of soap under the bedsheet to fend off charley horses. There is scarce scientific data to back these claims. One Harvard study described an ion channel called TRPV1 that activates the spinal column and inhibits the firing of nerves to dull the pain of cramps. It is possible that the protons in pickle juice use this mechanism to help alleviate the discomfort. Remember that a mere 2 ounce shot of the juice may contain a few hundred milligrams of sodium, so anyone with heart disease, hypertension, or renal insufficiency should exercise caution. Quinine has potential side effects such as severe bleeding and heart arrhythmias. There does not seem to be any harm from using a bar of nice smelling soap if you have a strong urge to try it under your bedsheet. If nothing else, it will help your bed smell nice!

Having a magnesium, potassium, or calcium deficiency can contribute to leg cramps, however, your medical history must be taken into account before you consider using any over-the-counter supplements. It is always better to discuss with your Primary Care Provider to avoid any adverse interactions.

Although infrequent incidences of muscle spasms may not be anything to worry about, they are signs that the spasms might be more than a run-of-the-mill charley horse. Studies have shown that leg cramps at night are a very common manifestation of venous disease in the legs. Our veins are responsible for collecting de-oxygenated blood from the tissues and returning it to the heart and lungs, where the blood is replenished with oxygen and nutrients. Veins in the legs tend to fail more easily due to risk factors such as genetic predisposition, prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancies, and age. When some veins fail, the blood cannot flow through them effectively and starts pooling in the legs. In face of compromised blood flow, calf muscles are not able to function appropriately and cause cramps (charley horses) and restlessness (Restless Leg Syndrome).

CHARLEY HORSE

WHAT IS IT?

WHO GETS THEM?

A "charley horse" is another term for a muscle spasm or cramp in the leg. While cramps can happen in any muscle, charley horse is most commonly noted in calf muscles and feet.

Anyone can develop a charley horse, however, according to the National Institute on Aging, not drinking enough water, poor muscle conditioning, and certain medications are factors that make people more susceptible to getting a charley horse as they age.

WHAT TO DO?

There are a few ways you can ease the pain from your charley horse. Drinking electrolytes and stretching can help to keep your muscles loose, as well as trying to take breaks from sitting for long periods of time. Applying an ice pack for 10-15 minutes following strenuous exercise can also calm down muscle tension.

If you are experiencing muscle cramps regularly, it may be a sign of blood flow in your legs due to veins that have failed. Call us for a free consultation. Your Vein Specialist will ask you some questions and likely check the blood flow using ultrasound.

Remember that vein problems in the legs affect more than half of adults. In addition to leg cramps, you may notice heaviness in your legs, tiredness, itching, burning, restlessness, or leg swelling. The affected veins are typically deep inside the legs, hence you may not see them on the skin surface.

Left untreated, blood flow in the legs continues to worsen. Varicose veins and venous insufficiency may lead to blood clots, discoloration of the skin, sores that do not heal well, bleeding veins, and frequent skin infections.

Modern treatments are minimally invasive with minimal to no pain, no downtime, and almost all insurance companies offer coverage for symptomatic venous problems.

I cannot emphasize enough the seriousness of repetitive muscle cramps. One of our patients, Sandra Dyer, has graciously shared her story. She and her husband came to us looking for answers after three visits to the hospital for severe leg cramps.

Like most chronic conditions, left untreated, the diseased (varicose) veins continue to worsen and may cause other complications such as swelling, skin discoloration, blood clots, poorly healing sores, infection, or bleeding.

Using modern technology, we are now able to easily seal the diseased veins with help of endovenous laser ablation, allowing you to return to normal activities, without any downtime. Treatment of symptomatic venous disease is typically covered by most insurance companies including Medicare and Medicaid.

If “charley horses” are visiting you at night, call 816-396-0245 to get back in the saddle or schedule a Consultation today.

Gladys Kline

Gladys Kline Poster web I came into the Alsara Clinic because I had spider veins and they were really driving me crazy. And I really have a lot of pain behind the leg where those spider veins were, so I just kinda lived with fears. I never wore shorts or anything like that because they really looked bad.

Earlier, when we would take long car rides to go see the kids, my leg and feet would swell. [My leg] got really heavy. Just to get out of the car, I’d have to lift my leg just to put it out there and stand up and get my leg [working]. It was miserable and I hated to go for long car rides.

One day my husband found this flyer in the mail and so, made the call, came in, and the staff was amazing! Dr. Gupta was so good about explaining everything, I just couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

As far as the treatments go, I really thought at first they were going to be kinda painful. They weren’t bad at all, especially the spider veins – it’s a real quick little treatment, just a little sting like a mosquito bite. It just wasn’t bad at all. And the recovery time is so minimal. You can go right back to work. It’s no big deal. Anybody can do it.

Recently, since I’ve had the laser done, we went for a long car ride and I didn’t have any problems. No swelling, no having to lift my leg to get out of the car, I just immediately got out, and I realized 'wow'. So it’s been amazing. I completely can tell the difference.

I highly recommend it. If you have any problems with your legs: if they’re hurting, if they’re heavy, if you just don’t like how they are looking, [the treatment is] really not that bad. It’s worth it, it really is. Don’t put it off.

I would much rather be pain-free and have the energy in my legs to run around and catch those five grandkids! I just highly recommend it.

Katrina Brown

Katrina Brown poster My name is Katrina Brown. I enjoy spending time with my family. I enjoy walking - even more so now that I’ve had treatment on my legs.

What were your symptoms? How did they affect your daily life?

Before I had treatment, I was having restless legs at night. I hadn’t even realized how tired my legs were until after the treatment. I was having heavy, tired legs and just feeling the need to move my legs at night, just readjusting a lot as I was trying to fall asleep. Just the heaviness, the achiness, um, a lot of swelling after a day of activity when I didn’t have a chance to put my feet up and rest. I had some obvious varicose veins that I was concerned about.

How did you hear about Alsara Vein Clinic?

I’d seen a commercial about vein treatment, and so I just made a mental note to ask my Nurse Practitioner the next time I saw her, and she’s like 'Oh, yes, we can get that looked at'. And she referred be to Dr. Gupta.

What was your first impression of Alsara Vein Clinic?

After I came and saw Dr. Gupta and Kati and everyone for the consultation, I really liked the clinic. Everyone was very friendly. The clinic was nicely decorated, it’s pretty, and it smells good, and it’s always so calm and peaceful here. I really enjoy coming here… which sounds strange to say you really enjoy going for a medical treatment, but it’s just a nice, pleasant atmosphere.

How did you feel during and after your treatment?

I’ve had the laser treatment and the Varithena®. With the laser treatment, I don’t remember there being any pain. They do numb your leg as the procedure’s done – I mean, not your whole leg; it won’t be numb. They numb inside of the vein. And after the Varithena®, I didn’t feel anything. There was nothing whatsoever. Probably the most uncomfortable part was just wearing the stockings, and that’s so not a big deal. I have very sensitive skin and I get itchy from a band aid or a piece of tape, so, probably just the little band aid on there was the most irritating thing, ha!

Dr. Gupta does a good job of giving analogies to explain how your leaky veins affect the rest of your body, how it can affect your health long-term, and how – even if you can see and feel the problem – it could be lurking 'behind the walls' is what he would say! And the treatment was pretty much painless. Everyone made everything very clear before they did anything. Kati was very good at explaining what was going to happen and what she was doing. And as you’re getting the procedure, you’re able to see on the screen what Kati and Dr. Gupta are looking at and what’s taking place.

What are you able to do after treatment that you couldn’t do before?

I know for sure that I’m so much more active since I’ve gotten the treatment. And the swelling that I use to have before in my legs at the end of the day – if I was up doing anything at all, my legs would be so swollen by the end of the day that it would feel tight, and I would be just exhausted… like, I was ready for the day to be over. And now, the swelling has greatly changed – there’s not all that swelling in my legs at the end of the day. And it really helps me feel like you can go ahead and do something else the next day. You’re not going to be having to recover from a day of activity with a day of rest.

Now I feel like I can spend a whole day out shopping and running around without having to take time out to rest and put your feet up so that I’m not having swelling all day. I’m a lot more comfortable as I go about the things I do. Since I’ve had treatment, I’ve been able to walk; I’ve increased my walking between just my daily activities plus my exercise. I’ve been getting between five and seven miles of walking in a day, so I have so much more energy. I’m not flopping around like a fish at night anymore, ha hah!

I had two or three long veins that were visibly bulging, and now I can’t see those at all, so that’s great, ha! My legs look a lot better, for sure.

How would you describe Doctor Gupta?

Dr. Gupta is very friendly. I get the feeling that he’s probably a very good host when he has friends and family to his home because he’s always offering drinks, and he’s very good at simplifying things and putting them in basic, understandable terms. He always has an analogy for everything, and he takes the time to show you on the screen what he’s doing and why, and explain how this is good for your overall health in the long-term.

What is your impression of the staff at Alsara Vein Clinic?

The staff is wonderful. The first person I met was Kati, and she is amazing. She’s always calm and she’s really good at making you feel relaxed by caring on casual conversation. I felt like she was a friend as soon as I met her. She’s a hard worker. She really takes the time to make people feel comfortable. I was actually here one of the first days that Mia (Front Office Coordinator) came to work, which was pretty neat to see a new person on staff, and it was kinda fun to watch her as she’s progressed over the last few months working here.

How was your insurance coverage?

Insurance covered everything 100%. I believe my Nurse Practitioner checked to make sure that my insurance was accepted at Alsara, and there was never any problem. I believe they got pre-approval before any of the procedures, and I’ve never receive a bill or anything.

Would you recommend Alsara Vein Clinic to family or friends?

I would definitely recommend Alsara Vein Clinic. And I have recommended to my sister, my aunt, my grandmother that they come here. And actually, my first visit, I brought my mom along with me because I thought ‘Hey, we could make a day of it, go shopping, go out to eat’. And, we got to looking at the pictures, watching the video, and reading the information, and I said ‘Mom, I think you need treatment as well’. And she decided that that might be what was wrong with her legs. She’d been [previously] treated for several other medical conditions for her legs that the treatments never seemed successful. So I think, at the time, the doctors were looking at different issues and those weren’t her particular issues. So my mom did end up speaking to Dr. Gupta and he did the test on her, and she ended up pursuing treatment as well.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

My grandfather was a postal employee for many years and he always walked his route. As he got older, he had problems with his legs, and we were never really sure what the issue was. They got so bad that they ended up becoming infected, and he was in a wound hospital for several months. And after coming here to Alsara Vein Clinic, I realized by looking at the pictures that they had here that his medical condition probably was varicose veins that had went untreated for a year.

I had never really considered it a problem until I saw the commercial and realized it was a medical problem, not just a problem of wanting your legs to look good in the summer time. And when I saw the commercials, I realized ‘Oh, this might be an issue’. As I explored the issue further, after I came here for treatment, I realized that this was a medical issue for several people in both sides of my family.

I do wish I’d known about Alsara Vein Clinic and varicose vein treatment sooner. I feel like my legs are doing really well now, but there’s people in my family that I wish I could have told them about it sooner, and gotten treatment a lot sooner. I feel like mine happened just at the right time, but there are other people that I would like to have told even years ago.

Leg Swelling

Swelling in the legs can be a sign of poorly functioning veins in the legs. When veins fail, blood that normally flows upwards toward the heart is pulled by gravity to pool inside the legs. The backflow, called venous reflux, strains the vein walls and blood plasma leaks out into the surrounding space in the legs leading to swelling in the feet, ankles, and calves. Leg swelling and associated skin changes are termed chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Modern treatment options available for the treatment of the diseased veins are safe, effective, and require no downtime. Almost all insurance companies offer coverage for the treatment of symptomatic vein problems.

Edema is primarily noted at the end of the day that improves with leg elevation. Left untreated, the accumulation of fluid inside the legs overwhelms the lymphatic system which works as a safety valve to move excess fluid out of the legs and becomes phlebolymphedema. Fluid accumulation in the leg is a combination of plasma and protein-rich fluid that triggers an inflammatory reaction and fibrosis (hardening of the skin and soft tissue) which is irreversible. Treatment of lymphedema is limited to manual compression therapy and lifelong use of compression garments.
