About our Vein Clinic

Our founder and lead Phlebologist, Dr. Sameer Gupta ("Dr. Sam"), is a Harvard graduate who trained at Mayo Clinic, and is a recognized leader in the treatment of vein disease throughout the world, having treated thousands of patients across the United States and abroad. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine. He is one of the 795 Physicians in the nation currently certified by The American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine.

Many of our patients have found success after previously failed varicose vein treatments elsewhere, such as painful vein stripping, injection sclerotherapy, and radiofrequency ablation (VNUS closure). Our varicose vein treatments are virtually pain-free, performed in-office, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

Alsara Vein Clinic is located across from Dunkin' Donut Shop, between Kline Motors and Sinclair gas station at 1105 S Belt Hwy, St Joseph, MO 64507, less than a milenorth of US-36 on US-169.  There is ample parking with handicap access. The interior is very comfortable and homey.

There is no referral necessary to seek care. We offer consultations. Typically, the next step is a screening and diagnosis, which is done in the office and is pain-free. The Phlebologist (Vein Specialist) will perform a detailed examination, make a diagnosis, and will then discuss with you the best treatment options. Alsara Vein Clinic accepts most insurances. Our Patient Account Services personnel will be able to determine your insurance coverage and any copays during your visit.

At Alsara Vein Clinic, we do veins all day, every day. We love what we do, and more importantly, we love putting smiles on our patient's faces after life-changing treatments. Life is a beautiful journey. We're here to help. Call us at 816-396-0245, download our free info brochure, or visit Alsara Vein Clinic at 1105 S Belt Hwy, Saint Joseph, MO 64507 (see Map location).

Amanda Stoner

Amanda Stoner Poster web Alsara Clinic has been a great answer to my problems. And I was at my breaking point.

I came to Alsara Clinic because I was having some difficulty with my legs. They were very swollen and itchy and I had tried for two years everything from topical creams, shots, different types of medications, and nothing was getting rid of it. So I came here as a last resort to see if there was anything that Dr. Gupta could do for me.

When I came to Alsara for my mapping experience, I was very excited, and the tech that did my ultrasound was very friendly. When I had my procedure done, the room was very comfortable. I was able to relax and rest, and knowing that the staff was going to take care of me. Dr. Gupta came in and explained the procedure, and it went very well.

Since treatment, I don’t have any of those symptoms at all. I can work my bartending job and be on my feet all day and I don’t get that tired feeling anymore. I don’t have the aches; I don’t have the itching; I don’t have any of those urges anymore. I’m very thankful. And I can walk. The day that it was done, I didn’t stop going to work. I didn’t sit around the house. I stayed active. A week later, it’s like it never happened.

The staff here are amazing. They’re always nice and friendly, above and beyond; whether it was questions or assistance. I was having trouble getting compression socks in St. Joe, so the staff called around to Kansas City, and about the seventh place, they were able to locate a place that I could go to get the supplies that I needed. They could’ve just said, ‘you’re just going to have to order them and wait three or four days’. I didn’t want to have to wait. They go above and beyond, and that starts with your receptionist clear through to the techs, and definitely Dr. Gupta. I’m very blessed to have come here and had the treatment done.

I plan on taking my son to Disneyland next month, and as soon as the other leg heals, I’ll go get some capris and we’re going to go to the beach!

For anybody that has any type of Restless Leg Syndrome, spider veins, varicose veins, swelling, edema, anything, it’s a free consultation so why not try and see if Dr. Gupta can help you. Even for someone without insurance, the treatments are definitely affordable. It’s worth it. It will change your life.

Comparing Leg Vein Problems to a House with Leaky Pipes

Veins, acting as “pipes,” have to frequently work against gravity to push blood back towards the heart especially when we sit or stand. These veins have valves that assist in the one-way flow back to the heart. Further, leg muscles especially calf muscles act like a pump much like a sump pump in our basement.

leg veins are like leaky pipes in a houseClick to view large image

Over time, compounded by factors such as genetic predisposition, pregnancies, hormonal changes, prolonged sitting or standing, lifting weights, and age, some veins fail. wrapping pipesUnable to move forward, blood begins to backtrack and pool in the legs causing the familiar symptoms of heaviness, achiness, and tiredness in legs, particularly in the evenings. Increased pressure on the vein walls makes them “gnarly” or varicose. Some veins that are close to the surface of the skin can be seen from the outside as ropy veins or spider veins.

Venous hypertension (increased pressure of the blood in failed veins) predisposes you to profuse bleeding. Elevated pressure causes fluid from veins to leak out into surrounding space much like flooding in our basement when a pipe breaks.

leakage flooding cartoonRemember that the blood in veins is deoxygenated (has “low” oxygen content) and replete with waste products. This blood needs to be sent back to the heart where it can be enriched and put back in circulation. When there is an increased buildup of venous blood in the legs, patients may notice itching, burning, leg cramps (charley horses), and restlessness. Persistent stasis (pooling) causes hyperpigmentation (discoloration of the skin due to deposition of the hemosiderin pigment from the breakdown of red blood cells), cellulitis (skin infection), thrombosis (blood clots), and poorly healing ulcers (sores) in the legs. This is comparable to staining on the walls from leaky pipes, growth of mold, cracks in the walls, and eventually its breakdown.

These unhealthy veins in the legs are unnecessary. In the past, they were removed surgically. Modern treatment options are much easier, safer, and very effective with no downtime. Almost all insurance including Medicare offers coverage for symptomatic varicose veins. Contact Alsara Vein Clinic at 816-396-0245 to set up a Consultation today.

Finding Happiness in Troubled Times

A recent survey, conducted by the National Science Foundation, reported that Americans are the unhappiest they’ve been in 50 years. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns, economic instability, and political unrest are enough to overwhelm anyone.

But how does one boost their level of happiness amidst a relentless pandemic? I believe that there are ways to stay healthy and achieve fulfillment in life if we focus on our priorities. I present to you, arguably, the two most important factors backed by science to help navigate through tumultuous times.

Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Harvard University conducted the longest study of adults for clues to leading healthy and happy lives. Analysis of the data collected over the course of 80+ years revealed startling information. Researchers reported that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships have a powerful influence on our health.

robertwaldingerIn his TED talk, Robert Waldinger, Director of the Harvard Study, states that many people tend to think that fame, fortune, and hard work will bring them happiness. The study found that social connections are the most important factor responsible for our well-being. Numerous other equally surprising correlations came out of this study, such as people’s level of satisfaction with their relationships at age 50 was a better predictor of physical health than their cholesterol levels were, and that marital satisfaction has a protective effect on mental health.

Waldinger stated in his TED talk, “Good relationships don’t just protect our bodies; they protect our brains”.  He reported that those who kept warm relationships were found to live longer and happier while the loners tended to die earlier.

Take Care of Your Health

Many people are delaying their medical care waiting for normalcy to return, which is actually nowhere in sight. Another report indicated that 80% of adults are concerned about catching the Covid-19 virus in the emergency room and avoid seeking care, even during an emergency.

Several studies have shown that being happy has a positive impact on our health, correlating to a 13-26% reduction in the risk of heart disease., ,  One doesn’t need scientific evidence to recognize that happiness can be elusive in absence of good health. In fact, the constitution of the World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”.

At an organic level, we are composed of countless cells, each performing a function while subject to growth, repair, and replacement within our body. Cells form tissue that in turn form organ systems such as skin, brain, and the vascular system.

Food is necessary for the cell to function, hence a person needs to have a balanced diet. Likewise, adequate sleep, regular exercise, and management of stress ensure proper bodily functions. The slightest breakdown in one part of our body can adversely affect various organ systems, interfering with our ability to enjoy a fulfilling happy life. Breakdown in the venous system in our legs is no exception to the interconnectedness.

Although vein problems affect almost half of the adult population, there are many who are living with heaviness in their legs, chronic fatigue, leg cramps, and restlessness in their legs but unaware of the association.

Discomfort in the legs and the inability to get a restful sleep at night due to restless leg syndrome has a compounding effect leading to a further reduction in the ability to stay active. Reduction in the activity of the calf pump leads to worsening of chronic venous insufficiency. One can see how this forms a self-perpetuating cycle leading to the deterioration of overall health and feeling of well-being.

sherlock blood clotTo make matters worse, patients are unable to make a correlation between veins and their symptoms often confusing spider veins with the diseased veins present deep inside the leg responsible for chronic venous insufficiency. Left untreated, the condition continues to worsen and may manifest as frequent skin infections (cellulitis), profuse bleeding, poorly healing sores in the legs, and life-threatening blood clots.

Gone are the days of painful vein stripping with prolonged recovery times. The latest treatment options such as Laser ablation, Varithena, and the revolutionary Venaseal (medical superglue) are minimally invasive, safe, and very effective. There is minimal to no discomfort during the procedures and there is no downtime. You can start the New Year with healthy, pain-free beautiful legs.

Always remember that life is a beautiful journey… and you will need your legs for it!

Gladys Kline

Gladys Kline Poster web I came into the Alsara Clinic because I had spider veins and they were really driving me crazy. And I really have a lot of pain behind the leg where those spider veins were, so I just kinda lived with fears. I never wore shorts or anything like that because they really looked bad.

Earlier, when we would take long car rides to go see the kids, my leg and feet would swell. [My leg] got really heavy. Just to get out of the car, I’d have to lift my leg just to put it out there and stand up and get my leg [working]. It was miserable and I hated to go for long car rides.

One day my husband found this flyer in the mail and so, made the call, came in, and the staff was amazing! Dr. Gupta was so good about explaining everything, I just couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

As far as the treatments go, I really thought at first they were going to be kinda painful. They weren’t bad at all, especially the spider veins – it’s a real quick little treatment, just a little sting like a mosquito bite. It just wasn’t bad at all. And the recovery time is so minimal. You can go right back to work. It’s no big deal. Anybody can do it.

Recently, since I’ve had the laser done, we went for a long car ride and I didn’t have any problems. No swelling, no having to lift my leg to get out of the car, I just immediately got out, and I realized 'wow'. So it’s been amazing. I completely can tell the difference.

I highly recommend it. If you have any problems with your legs: if they’re hurting, if they’re heavy, if you just don’t like how they are looking, [the treatment is] really not that bad. It’s worth it, it really is. Don’t put it off.

I would much rather be pain-free and have the energy in my legs to run around and catch those five grandkids! I just highly recommend it.

Patrice Ruch

Patrice Ruch Poster web I came to the Alsara Clinic a couple of months ago, I was having some pain in my legs, some heaviness, just really not feeling good about even how my leg looked. I had a great recommendation from a friend of mine and decided to actually fly up from Texas to see Dr. Gupta and his staff. Walking in it definitely was very warm and welcoming. It was very state-of-the-art, felt very welcomed here, felt really like I could tell them anything.

[Varicose and spider veins] was something I had dealt with for years. My mother actually had varicose veins and I really didn’t understand that that was a hereditary issue. So he [Dr. Gupta] really helped me realize, I can do something about this, and really feel like I can work out and walk and feel good afterward instead of, just laying on the couch for the rest of the evening because my leg didn’t feel good.

[The treatment] was painless. They sat and chatted with me through it. I didn’t even know it had really started because I was laying on the bed, and then it was over. I was able to get back up and go about my day for the rest of the day. So hardly any recovery time. It was great.

It really has impacted my life. My husband and I travel quite a bit, I walk six to eight miles-a-day, I hit the gym almost every day, and now I feel like I can do that without any pain. I have to admit, too, varicose veins on my left leg, they were unsightly, and I wear a lot of shorts. I live in Texas and we wear a lot of swimsuits and we travel, so just knowing I have confidence that I can feel my best and look my best, and I have to thank Dr. Gupta and his staff for that.

I would definitely recommend Dr. Gupta; but not only him, really his staff. From the time you walk in – the front desk receptionist, the office manager, techs, the nurses, Dr. Gupta – they all make you feel very welcome. I really appreciated them and can tell that they really enjoy their job, and I think that that’s perfect to have that sort of passion for your job, and that comes across with the staff and Dr. Gupta.

If you are having some issues, get it taken care of, or at least come in. I know that Dr. Gupta does have free consultations, and so it’s an hour out of your day, it will make your life feel so much better when you get something taken care of in your legs: your varicose veins or your spider veins. It really has improved my life quite a bit.

  • We treat veins all day, every day; more importantly, we love what we do

What is Injection Sclerotherapy?

Cryo SclerotherapyInjection sclerotherapy is the quality standard for spider veins treatment. Using a special light, the vein is isolated and a small amount of medication (sclerosant) is injected inside the vein. The medication "closes" the vein and stops the flow of blood.

Although the appearance of treated spider veins improves (diminishes) immediately, the spider veins are slowly absorbed by the body over a course of several weeks or months. Typically, several veins can be treated in one session and more than one session may be required depending on the extent of your spider veins. It is also possible that repeat injections in a single vein may be necessary since some spider veins are more "stubborn" than others.

What is VeinGogh?

vein gogh the doctors smVeinGogh is a breakthrough treatment technology for spider veins that allows us to treat even the smallest and the curviest vein where sclerotherapy may not be an option. An extremely tiny needle focuses energy (ohmic thermolysis) directly onto the spider vein and closes it immediately.

This VeinGogh spider vein treatment is not dependent on skin types, like lasers and other light-based therapies, and provides a superior solution for sealing vessels that have shown resistance to other treatment options. The tissue on the skin surface is rarely affected and many patients report minimal, if any, discomfort compared to laser or intense pulsed light therapies used elsewhere to remove spider veins. As with sclerotherapy, over time the body absorbs the "closed" veins.

Generally, patients will require sclerotherapy treatment first, as it is still the first option in treating spider veins. VeinGoghtreatment is then recommended for any spider veins remaining that meet the criteria in size. Rest assured, Alsara Vein Clinic uses the most sophisticated technology available and highly skilled staff to meet your needs for spider vein removal treatments.

Spider Veins

Spider Veins

What are Spider Veins?

spider veins treatmentSpider veins are the smaller versions of varicose veins caused by the same risk factors as underlying varicose veins. Based on the size of the surface veins (commonly referred to as “spider veins”), veins may be bluish in color (venulectasia), green (reticular veins) or red/purple (telangiectasia).

How are Spider Veins Treated?

At Alsara Vein Clinic, we have almost every treatment modality for the treatment of spider veins. Over the years, we have realized that “inside-out” is the best approach to give you an optimal, long-lasting outcome. We first scan the affected areas using ultrasound looking for any “feeder” veins beneath the skin surface. If present, we use Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy to close an entire cluster of spider veins at its source beneath the skin that is otherwise not visible from the outside. Any remaining surface veins are then treated using Injection Sclerotherapy (the Gold Standard) by injecting medication (Sclerosant) directly into the affected surface veins. We use Ohmic Thermolysis or Surface Laser for any remaining veins that are not eligible for sclerotherapy due to their size or location (near ankle or foot). These modalities use a spectrum of light that targets spider veins from the outside and closes them by heating the hemoglobin within the affected veins.

Occasionally, veins near the surface of the skin are too large to treat with sclerotherapy and not small enough to treat with Ohmic Thermolysis or Surface Laser. Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive treatment to remove larger surface veins including varicose veins that appear on the skin surface. This is not to be confused with surgical vein stripping, which is a much more invasive procedure performed in the hospital setting under general anesthesia and traditionally was used to remove larger, deeper varicose veins. Microphlebectomy is performed in the comfort of our office. Using very fine instruments, the unwanted bulging veins are removed through minuscule openings without the need for sutures and typically without causing any scarring. The patient is able to resume normal activities quickly and is immediately rid of the unsightly veins that are removed permanently.

We go to extreme lengths to make sure the treatments are safe and effective, but as painless as possible.

Varicose Veins can feel worse in Summer - 5 Tips to fight back

Because heat dilates the veins, many vein issues worsen during the summertime. With higher temperatures, veins expand leading to more pooling of blood in the legs and problems associated with it such as leg pain, tiredness, leg cramps, swelling (edema) and blood clots. There is also an increased chance of seeing new spider veins.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy the warm season.

  1. Stay Cool
Make sure you wear clothes that won't trap heat. Always use sunblock (SPF 30 or above) not just on your legs, but also on your face and nose, where thinner skin is more prone to developing spider veins.
  2. Take a Dive
In addition to offering great respite from the summer heat, swimming can also promote normal circulation in your legs. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that saves your joints from the pounding, yet increases your heart rate and improves overall circulation. Also, cooling exercises like swimming, surfing, and brisk evening walks help keep the blood vessels from dilating.
  3. hydratedStay Hydrated
Keeping your body properly hydrated will help effectively circulate blood, heal injuries faster, and allow for healthier skin. While the summer heat can easily dry anyone out, patients with vein problems should pay closer attention to their hydration during this time. If you plan on being out of the AC, plan to also bring a water bottle along and avoid caffeine as much as possible.
  4. Avoid Heels
We recommend flats and sandals rather than high heels to help your calf muscles pump blood up from the leg to the heart. Wearing lower heels makes your calves work a little harder ensuring the correct flow of blood.
  5. Wear Compression Stockings
They may not be at the top of anyone’s list for hot summer fashions, but compression stockings put pressure on your legs that helps move blood up and away from your lower legs. Though you may not want to wear them outside during July and August for fear of overheating, wearing them regularly will prevent blood from pooling in your legs, which can cause or worsen vein problems.

Varicose veins and spider veins have ruined too many summers. To keep them from ruining this one, schedule an appointment with a Vein Specialist. Current treatments allow us to permanently treat affected veins with no downtime. Treatment of symptomatic varicose veins is covered by almost all insurances including Medicare and Medicaid.

Life is a beautiful journey. Don't let your legs slow you down.

Varicose Veins During Summer

Because heat dilates the veins, many vein issues increase during the summertime. As the veins expand with higher temperatures, leaky veins can get even worse, leading to more pooling of blood in your legs and problems associated with it such as pain, tiredness, cramps, swelling, and clots. There is an increased chance of seeing new spider veins, pain, and symptoms. Here are tips to help you enjoy the warm season:

1 Stay Cool

varicose veins signs and symptomsMake sure you wear clothes that won’t trap heat. Always use sunblock (SPF 30 or above) not just on your legs, but also on your face and nose, where thinner skin is more prone to developing spider veins.

2 Take a Dive

In addition to offering great respite from the summer heat, swimming is one of the best ways to promote normal circulation in your legs. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that saves your joints from the pounding, yet increases your heart rate and improves circulation overall. Also, cooling exercises like swimming and brisk evening walks are best because the lower temperatures help prevent the blood vessels from dilating.

3 Stay Hydrated

Keeping your body properly hydrated will help it effectively circulate blood, heal injuries faster, and allow for healthier skin. Though it seems like a no-brainer, patients with vein problems should pay close attention to their hydration levels during the summer when the heat can easily dry anyone out. If you plan on being out of the A/C, plan to also bring a water bottle along. Avoid caffeine.

4 Avoid Heels

We recommend flats and sandals rather than high heels as they keep your calf muscles from effectively pumping blood out of the leg. Wearing lower heels makes your calves work a little harder, keeping blood pumping throughout your legs and back to your heart where it belongs.

5 Elevate Your Legs

Since veins in our legs have to work against gravity to send blood back to the heart, it helps them if you take periodic 15-minute breaks, elevating your legs above the level of your heart. This facilitates the flow of blood back to the heart and helps “empty” some of the blood pooled in your legs.

6 Calf Pumps

Our calf muscles play a very important role in helping “push” blood upwards towards the heart against gravity. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods renders the calf pump inactive. We recommend taking breaks to walk or stand on tiptoes for 10-second intervals throughout the day whenever possible. Brisk walking, bicycling, using a stepper, and swimming is some of the best ways to strengthen calf muscles.

7 Wear Compression Stockings

They may not be at the top of anyone’s list of hot summer fashions, but compression stockings put pressure on your legs which helps to move blood up and away from your lower legs. Though you may not want to wear them outside during July and August for fear of overheating, wearing them regularly may prevent blood from pooling in your legs, which can cause or worsen vein problems.

Vein Diseases - Overview

An estimated 60% of women and men suffer from vein disease.

Some of the signs and symptoms include leg pain, achy legs, burning in legs, numbness in legs, leg cramps, heaviness in legs, itching legs, restless legs, tired legs, swelling in ankles or leg calves. Left untreated, it may result in skin discoloration, bleeding veins, sores that heal poorly, and blood clots.

To understand vein disease, you must first understand the function of veins. Arteries are blood vessels responsible for delivering blood to all areas of the body, including the legs. Veins are responsible for collecting the same blood and bringing it back to the heart. Leg veins, located farthest from the heart, have to work extra hard to push blood upward against gravity toward the heart.

Studies have shown that a vast majority of people have genetically weak veins. Now, if you add more risk factors such as standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, pregnancy, excess weight, and trauma, veins can start to fail. As veins begin to fail, blood starts to pool in the legs resulting in veins that are "varicose"—abnormally swollen or knotted.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large, bulging veins that are often visible on the skin surface, but the majority are weak or damaged blood vessels below the surface of the skin that cause poor circulation and are only visible with help of an ultrasound.

Spider Veins

Spider Veins are smaller versions of varicose veins that usually appear on the skin's surface as small, red to purple blood vessels that resemble a spider's web. While spider veins rarely pose a medical problem, they often signal problems in the larger veins below the skin's surface.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic Venous Insufficiency is a medical condition in which the veins are unable to pump oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart, often resulting in chronic swelling of the legs.

Blood Clots

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot within a deep vein and can be a complication of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Classic symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include swelling, leg pain, and skin redness of the affected area.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Varicose Veins and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) have many symptoms in common: an urge to move your legs, that creepy-crawly feeling, itching, tingling, and restlessness. These symptoms may be an indication of poor circulation, even though you have no visible varicose veins.

Edema (swelling)

Leg swelling (edema) is a common sign of varicose veins. The pooling of blood, increased pressure and subsequent “leakage” causes swelling in the ankles and feet as gravity pulls the fluid down.

Infection / Leg Ulcers

Over time, you may develop leg ulcers. Ulcers due to varicose veins are painful and difficult to heal unless the underlying venous backflow is corrected.

Why Varicose Veins are Worse in Summer

Because heat dilates the veins, many vein issues worsen during the summertime. As the veins expand with higher temperatures, leaky veins can get even worse, leading to more pooling of blood in your legs and problems associated with it such as pain, tiredness, cramps, swelling, and clots. There is an increased chance of seeing new spider veins, pain, and worse symptoms. Here are tips to help you enjoy the warm season:

Five Tips To Fight Back

  1. Stay Cool
Make sure you wear clothes that won’t trap heat. Always use sunblock (SPF 30 or above) not just on your legs, but also on your face and nose, where thinner skin is more prone to developing spider veins
  2. Take a Dive
In addition to offering great respite from the summer heat, swimming is one of the best ways to promote normal circulation in your legs. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that saves your joints from the pounding yet increases your heart rate and improves circulation overall. Also, cooling exercises like swimming and brisk evening walks are best because the coolness helps keep the blood vessels from dilating.
  3. Stay Hydrated
Keeping your body properly hydrated will help it effectively circulate blood, heal injuries faster, and allow for healthier skin. Though it seems like a no-brainer, patients with vein problems should pay especially close attention to their hydration levels during the summer when the heat can easily dry anyone out. If you plan on being out of the AC, plan to also bring a water bottle along. Avoid caffeine.
  4. Avoid Heels
We recommend ats and sandals rather than high heels that keep your calf muscles from effectively pumping blood out of the leg. Wearing lower heels makes your calves work a little harder, keeping blood pumping out of your legs and back to your heart where it belongs.
  5. Wear Compression Stockings
They may not be at the top of anyone’s list of hot summer fashions, but compression stockings put pressure on your legs that helps to move blood up and away from your lower legs. Though you may not want to wear them outside during July and August for fear of overheating, wearing them regularly may prevent blood from pooling in your legs, which can cause or worsen vein problems.
