Leg Pain? Restless Legs? Common symptoms of vein disease

Leg Pain and/or Restless Legs Syndrome is a very common symptom of deeper vein problems. We've helped thousands achieve relief.

Even if you cannot see any visible or bulging varicose veins, your ongoing leg pain and/or restless legs syndrome may still be due to venous insufficiency. Other symptoms may include heavy legs, aching legs, tired legs, burning sensation in legs, itching, leg cramps or "charley horse", leg inflammation, swelling feet or ankles, skin discoloration, sores that heal poorly, skin ulcers, bleeding, even blood clots.

An estimated 60% of women and men suffer from vein disease.

Safely and permanently remove unsightly varicose veins with no downtime and minimal pain or risk of scarring

Alsara Vein Clinic believes in the comprehensive treatment of venous disorders. Our goal is to offer long-lasting results. We do not believe in band-aid treatments. Prior to performing microphlebectomy, we will examine the larger deeper veins in the legs using ultrasound. If there are problems with the deeper (feeder) veins, those must be addressed first, otherwise, the chances of the veins returning or new varicose veins developing in the area are significantly higher. The deeper saphenous veins are typically sealed using a laser (endovenous laser ablation or EVLA). When microphlebectomy is coupled with EVLA, both procedures may be performed on the same day or scheduled a few weeks apart. A study using 76 patients demonstrated that 58.2% of legs treated with EVLA alone did not require further treatment with microphlebectomy. In most cases, EVLA allowed the varicosities to decrease in size or disappear altogether.

Microphlebectomy is a permanent fix for the varicose vein. The vein cannot come back. Other veins may develop and even appear in the same location, but those that have been removed are gone for good. If new veins should develop, they can easily be eliminated with sclerotherapy injections or microphlebectomy.

The procedure itself typically takes less than one hour to perform and requires no downtime. Further, microphlebectomy may be covered by medical insurance if you are experiencing symptoms such as aching, burning, itching, or swelling in your legs caused by varicose veins. There may also be some incidence of blood clots or bleeding. If symptoms are not present, the procedure will be considered cosmetic hence insurance coverage would be unavailable.

Patients are amazed at how easy the microphlebectomy procedure is and how quickly they can see positive results. Patients often comment on how sorry they are that they waited so long to get rid of their unsightly varicose veins that are also a health hazard. Neuropathy in legs

Neuropathy in Legs? – Could be due to failed veins

Understanding the Connection Between Neuropathy and Venous Insufficiency

Neuropathy in legsVeins play a crucial role in circulating blood back to the heart. In the legs, they must work against gravity to push blood upward. When some veins fail to function properly, they may allow fluid to leak into surrounding tissues, irritating nearby nerves and potentially leading to neuropathy-like symptoms in the legs and feet. However, unlike true neuropathy, which involves permanent nerve damage, neuropathy-like symptoms linked to venous insufficiency tend to fluctuate throughout the day. These symptoms usually intensify with prolonged sitting or standing, particularly in the evening, and tend to improve with leg elevation or in the morning before lowering your legs below heart level.

The failed (varicose) veins are often not visible from the outside and can only be seen with the help of ultrasound. Several factors contribute to the development of varicose veins, including genetics, aging, prolonged standing, pregnancy, and excess weight. Common symptoms include leg heaviness, fatigue, aching, cramping, and restlessness. As pressure builds in the affected veins, blood can pool, leading to fluid leakage into surrounding tissues and causing swelling (edema). If left untreated, varicose veins can progress to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which may result in skin discoloration, recurrent infections, bleeding, blood clots, and non-healing leg ulcers.

Duplex Ultrasound

Duplex Ultrasound

A frequently overlooked complication of venous insufficiency is neuropathy.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, neuropathy is a condition that affects one or more nerves, resulting in symptoms like numbness and weakness. In cases of peripheral neuropathy affecting the legs and feet, individuals may experience tingling, burning sensations, pins and needles, numbness, or muscle weakness. These symptoms often worsen at night or after extended periods of sitting or standing due to fluid buildup from leaky veins, which increases pressure and inflammation. Additionally, impaired circulation from dysfunctional veins deprives nerve tissue of oxygen and essential nutrients, further contributing to nerve damage.

Dr. Gupta with patientUnlike neuropathy caused by diabetes, infections, vitamin deficiencies, or injuries—which are often permanent—neuropathy linked to venous insufficiency can fluctuate throughout the day and may be reversible. Symptoms tend to worsen with prolonged sitting or standing but often improve when the legs are elevated. Research* indicates that 65% of patients with both conditions experienced significant improvement or complete resolution of their neuropathic symptoms after receiving vein treatment.

The good news is that at Alsara Vein Clinic, a simple duplex ultrasound can help determine whether venous insufficiency is contributing to neuropathy symptoms. Treating diseased veins is a safe, virtually painless process with no required downtime. All procedures are performed in a comfortable clinic setting, and most insurance providers—including Medicare and Medicaid—cover treatment for symptomatic varicose veins.

Patrice Ruch

Patrice Ruch Poster web I came to the Alsara Clinic a couple of months ago, I was having some pain in my legs, some heaviness, just really not feeling good about even how my leg looked. I had a great recommendation from a friend of mine and decided to actually fly up from Texas to see Dr. Gupta and his staff. Walking in it definitely was very warm and welcoming. It was very state-of-the-art, felt very welcomed here, felt really like I could tell them anything.

[Varicose and spider veins] was something I had dealt with for years. My mother actually had varicose veins and I really didn’t understand that that was a hereditary issue. So he [Dr. Gupta] really helped me realize, I can do something about this, and really feel like I can work out and walk and feel good afterward instead of, just laying on the couch for the rest of the evening because my leg didn’t feel good.

[The treatment] was painless. They sat and chatted with me through it. I didn’t even know it had really started because I was laying on the bed, and then it was over. I was able to get back up and go about my day for the rest of the day. So hardly any recovery time. It was great.

It really has impacted my life. My husband and I travel quite a bit, I walk six to eight miles-a-day, I hit the gym almost every day, and now I feel like I can do that without any pain. I have to admit, too, varicose veins on my left leg, they were unsightly, and I wear a lot of shorts. I live in Texas and we wear a lot of swimsuits and we travel, so just knowing I have confidence that I can feel my best and look my best, and I have to thank Dr. Gupta and his staff for that.

I would definitely recommend Dr. Gupta; but not only him, really his staff. From the time you walk in – the front desk receptionist, the office manager, techs, the nurses, Dr. Gupta – they all make you feel very welcome. I really appreciated them and can tell that they really enjoy their job, and I think that that’s perfect to have that sort of passion for your job, and that comes across with the staff and Dr. Gupta.

If you are having some issues, get it taken care of, or at least come in. I know that Dr. Gupta does have free consultations, and so it’s an hour out of your day, it will make your life feel so much better when you get something taken care of in your legs: your varicose veins or your spider veins. It really has improved my life quite a bit.

President Trump – Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

President Donald Trump was recently diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). His diagnosis has sparked renewed interest in this common yet often overlooked condition. Many patients are now asking important questions: What is CVI? Is it serious? Who gets it? How is it treated? Let’s dive right in.

What is CVI?

RefluxingVeinAnimation smChronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a medical condition in which the veins in the legs don’t function properly, making it difficult to pump blood back to the heart. This leads to circulation problems and a variety of leg symptoms.

In the early stages, symptoms may be subtle such as heaviness, fatigue, aching, throbbing, itching, or burning in the legs. As the condition progresses, due to inadequate blood flow to calf muscles patients may experience leg cramps (often called “Charley horses”) or restlessness at night (Restless Leg Syndrome).

Without treatment, CVI can worsen and lead to leg swelling, skin discoloration, bleeding varicose veins, recurrent skin infections, blood clots and poorly healing sores (ulcers)

Progression of Varicose Veins

How Common is CVI?

CVI is extremely common, affecting 10–35% of adults in the U.S. Both men and women are at risk, but women often develop symptoms earlier due to pregnancies and hormonal changes. In fact, nearly 40% of women over age 50 have some degree of CVI.

Risk factors include family history of vein disease, age and prolonged standing or sitting

Treatment of CVI

In the past, treatment for CVI often required invasive vein stripping surgery in a hospital, followed by a long and painful recovery. Thankfully, modern medicine has transformed vein care.

Today, CVI can be treated in the comfort of an office setting with minimally invasive procedures. Diseased veins are safely closed, restoring healthy circulation. Patients typically return to normal activities immediately with no downtime, and minimal discomfort. Many notice improvements in their legs as soon as the next day.

A quick, painless duplex ultrasound can diagnose CVI, and your vein specialist will review personalized treatment options. Almost all insurance plans including Medicare cover treatment of symptomatic vein disease.

Varicose veins are a common cause of secondary RLS

Jumping can be good... as long as you have control over it!

restless legs syndrome jumping

restless legs rls

Varicose veins are a common cause of secondary RLS (restless leg syndrome). For those who have varicose veins, the symptoms of restlessness in legs center on the fact that leg muscles and tissue are not getting enough oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood. That "pins-and-needles" feeling is their body's way of telling them they need more blood flowing through their legs, and it creates an urge to move, making it difficult to sleep at night. In addition to cramps ("Charley horse") and restlessness in the legs, varicose vein sufferers may also notice heaviness, excessive tiredness, and aching in the legs. Left untreated the underlying venous insufficiency (pooling of blood in legs) may cause swelling, clots, and sores.

Primary Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Some patients have Primary RLS (restless leg syndrome). This means that the cause is unknown. In addition to varicose veins, there are other secondary causes of RLS including iron deficiency anemia, kidney failure, side effects of certain medications (such as medications used to control depression), peripheral neuropathy, and dehydration (inadequate fluid intake or caffeine intake).

restless leg syndrome specialist doctor st joseph moIf you experience restlessness in your legs, consult with a Vein Specialist to see if varicose veins may be the cause. A duplex ultrasound examination in the comforts of the office setting can help determine if varicose veins are present.

Treatment of varicose veins may alleviate the symptoms of RLS (restless leg syndrome). One study found that 98% with RLS (restless leg syndrome) and varicose veins noted improvement after treatment of varicose veins with sclerotherapy.* Newer treatments such as endovenous laser ablation are more effective than sclerotherapy and offer longer-term solutions. The use of medications to mask symptoms of RLS (restless leg syndrome) may cause side effects without addressing the underlying cause. Other ways to manage symptoms of restlessness in the legs include calf exercises, weight loss, and the use of graduated compression stockings.

Restless Legs - Varicose Veins may be responsible for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Many patients now recognize that varicose veins may not be visible from the outside. Most of our patients report experiencing tiredness, cramping (charley horse), restlessness, or swelling in the legs. Those whose condition has not reached one of the advanced stages often wonder if they are at increased risk of anything that could be limb or life-threatening.

At least one-third of our patients clearly have signs of advanced venous insufficiency – when varicose veins have progressed to a point where the chronic pooling of blood (stasis) in the legs causes skin changes. They may notice skin discoloration, thickening or hardening of the skin, recurrent skin infections, bleeding that can be profuse, and poorly healing sores in the legs. In addition, varicose veins may be an early warning sign of potentially deadly blood clots.

We routinely see patients with blood clots. Some are referred by their primary care providers and others present themselves with concerns about blood clots. Yet there are many patients who are surprised to find that they have a blood clot when we examine them using duplex ultrasound.

Introduction

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs to alleviate discomfort, ranging from aching and throbbing to itching and crawling sensations.2 Articulating these sensations can be challenging for some patients.

Who gets it?

Initially documented in 1945, RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease3, was reported to affect around 5% of the population. Recent studies, however, indicate a prevalence ranging from 3% to 15%. It tends to occur more frequently in women, with a nearly 2:1 female-to-male ratio. As age advances, there is a positive correlation with RLS prevalence. Genetics plays a role, as up to 25% of first-degree relatives of individuals with RLS report similar symptoms.4

Connecting Varicose Veins and RLS

Even in the 1940s, when Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) was first identified, Dr. Ekbom suggested that venous disease could be a potential cause. However, it took around fifty years to firmly establish this connection. A groundbreaking 1995 study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery treated 113 individuals with restless legs and ultrasound-confirmed vein disease using sclerotherapy.5 Surprisingly, 98% of participants reported immediate relief. Subsequent studies have consistently supported this link, uncovering RLS symptoms in individuals with primary and recurrent varicose veins1. Addressing superficial venous insufficiency has proven effective in alleviating RLS symptoms for most patients. Nonetheless, it's essential to acknowledge that certain conditions, including iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy, kidney failure, various neurological conditions, and specific medications, can also contribute to RLS symptoms.

Explaining the connection

Impaired venous blood return in the legs, particularly in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), may drive the subconscious urge to move the legs (RLS), forcing you to use your muscles that help pump blood back to the heart. Inflammation associated with CVI could lead to overactive nerves, intensifying the situation. Nighttime leg cramps and pain, often linked to varicose veins, can further disrupt sleep, aggravating leg restlessness.

Determining if Varicose Veins might be responsible for Restless Legs

A straightforward and noninvasive duplex ultrasound in your Vein Specialist’s office can identify any underlying venous issues. The Vein Specialist will review a treatment strategy if venous insufficiency is found. Typically, the affected veins are closed using one of the FDA-approved treatment modalities to reroute blood flow through healthier veins.6

Conclusion

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a common issue often linked to varicose veins. You might also be encountering other symptoms of varicose veins and associated venous insufficiency, including sensations of heaviness, fatigue, aching, cramping, and swelling in the legs. If left untreated, the condition can worsen, leading to potential complications such as blood clots, bleeding, frequent skin infections, and slow-healing sores. Medications for RLS, such as Ropinirole and Pramipexole, may mask the symptoms without addressing the underlying problem. Restless Legs (RLS) and Leg Cramps

Restless Legs (RLS) and Leg Cramps

Restless Legs and Leg Cramps are Common Symptoms of Varicose Veins

crampsLeg cramps and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are usually the first symptoms of varicose veins. One study showed that people suffering from varicose veins have a sixty-seven percent higher chance of experiencing cramps than those without. The same study reported that an overwhelming ninety-one percent experienced cramps most frequently in the calf region.*

Healthy veins in the legs collect de-oxygenated blood and return it to the heart and lungs where it is replenished with oxygen and nutrients. Varicose veins are “leaky pipes” in our legs that allow blood to pool and become stagnant. Due to the continued buildup of pressure in the deoxygenated blood and toxins, muscles in our legs begin functioning improperly. This results in the muscle cramps and restlessness many of our patients have experienced in their legs.

Since pressure is highest after prolonged sitting or standing due to the force of gravity, leg cramps and restless legs are noticed by patients more often at the end of the day. There can be other causes of cramps and restlessness in the legs.

cramps restless legs

However, if varicose veins are the contributing factor, the use of medications such as Requip, Mirapex, or Quinine may simply mask symptoms of RLS without addressing the underlying cause. Supplements, such as magnesium and calcium, may help relax the muscles and lead us to believe that nutritional supplements alone will rectify the problem. Unfortunately, the poor blood flow devoid of adequate oxygen remains uncorrected and the underlying disease may evolve into more serious problems such as blood clots, bleeding, infection of the skin in legs, and sores that are slow to heal.

Treatment of varicose veins may alleviate the symptoms of restless legs (RLS). In fact, one study found that ninety-eight percent of patients with RLS and varicose veins noted that the symptoms improved after using sclerotherapy.**  Another study reported that eighty-nine percent of patients enjoyed improvement after endo-venous laser ablation and sclerotherapy treatments.***  New treatments of varicose veins are safe, effective, virtually painless, and require no downtime. Almost all insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, offer coverage for symptomatic varicose veins. Rodney Stephenson

Rodney Stephenson Poster web My name is Rodney Dwayne Stephenson.

I own a small machine shop downtown. It’s called Metal Works Unlimited, Inc. I’ve had it for about… this would be 15 years that I’ve had my own business. I was partners for several years previous to that. And I have a wife and four great children.

I had a lot of fatigue in my legs, and the biggest symptom was leg cramps at night that would wake me up and keep me up for hours – I mean to the point to where I was almost in tears. And my late father-in-law is actually the one that gave me the tip. Now, he didn’t tell me where to go, but he gave me the tip. He said, you know, you really ought to have the varicose veins in your legs either taken out or at least looked at; at least have a scan. And when Doctor [Gupta] did the scan, he said ‘yeah, you’ve got a lot of blockage’.

And it’s unbelievable the difference [after treatment]. I haven’t had a cramp since they were removed; not one. And I have so much strength and energy in my legs. I always worked out, but now, it’s like I have the energy to go along with the enthusiasm.

Actually, one of your technicians, Kati Ussary, is the one that set it all up for me. And everything that she did, and your staff and doctor – top notch, five stars.

My consult: I loved the way that they explained it in detail. And sometimes, Doctor [Gupta] would say things that – like I’d have a confused look – and then he’d have a simile that would go with it, like compare it to a river, or blockage in a river, you know, things that would make it simpler for me to understand. And he thoroughly went through the process, step-by-step. And it played out exactly the way that he said.

During [the procedure], I was scared, you know, because I don’t like some of the things that go along with the procedure. But after, it’s like nothing whatsoever. And they always had things that you did after the procedure on each legs, and I just followed those [instructions] to a tee. I had zero problems.

Actually, it really… there’s a little bit of pain, but the anxiety was probably ‘cause I’m scared to death of needles. And as long as… but the way they handled me, they put cold wash rags on my head, and they just… they handled me perfectly.

Oh, everyone looks at my legs. I mean, my legs are beautiful, and the energy, and no legs cramps. If I have to put one… if you put me down to just one thing that benefitted: the legs cramps and being able to sleep at night.

There’s not a lot of things that I couldn’t do [before treatment], it was just that I couldn’t do ‘em as long or to the extent that I wanted to, like, I couldn’t walk a long distance. Now, I can walk for miles. It’d never affect me at all. And sleeping: ha, I’m able to sleep all the way through the night. Anybody that has paused sleeping, where you wake up and try to go back to sleep because of leg cramps or fatigue in your legs, it’s awful. And it has made me to where I can sleep all night. I don’t have to get up in the middle of the night with late cramps, try to stretch my legs out, and roll on the floor, and all the things that went with it.

How professional he was and how he explained the detailed procedures in – I’m gonna say laymen terms – to where you can understand ‘em. Ah, it’s hard to describe how genuinely simply he made it sound. There was a step-by-step procedure, like, you do one leg, and not all of it, you know, ‘cause [when] you get around the ankle areas and stuff, there’s bone, so they have to do a little different procedure. He explained everything and explained all the [ultrasound] scans – pre and post – that was just excellent. I mean, I’ve never had a doctor that explained things in a way that you could understand it. So, I tip my hat. I still can’t pronounce his name, that’s why I keep saying “doctor”.

It probably gets overused – awesome, five star – but, all the way from the office manager down to the people that clean the floor, it’s totally awesome. It’s very clean, and everything is explained to you. The processes, they’re all explained in detail where you can understand. They’re great. I would recommend… in fact, I recommended my mom. She turned 76 this year. But she has so much pain while she’s walking. And [Alsara] did the scan – she needs it. She just got scared. And I think that maybe after a little bit of time she’ll come back to it.

But, yes, I highly recommend it to anybody that’s having leg cramps, fatigue. At least have the scan to see if it’s necessary, and if it’s not necessary, then you’re not out anything. But, yes, I would highly recommend it to anybody that was experiencing things like I was.

Doctor Gupta is a unique individual. He has that unique mix of sternest and then he has that comical side that I’m sure a lot of people don’t see. It kind of breaks up the monotony of the procedures. There were several times that I was starting to experience some anxiety, and Doctor Gupta calmed me down, or like, before he would insert a needle he’d say “Like a little bee sting”. You know, he made things genuinely low-key; it took all my anxiety away. By the time he was all done, we were laughing and telling jokes!

It’s a very well-run business and I just loved everything about it. And the way that I was treated, the way they handle their billing, everything is top notch. The way they call you, email you, text you, work around whatever communications [regarding] the time of your procedure, to the end of it, to post [treatment] – everything –they do a great job of all of it.

Well, you know, I run my own business, and when somebody tells you ‘thank you’ and gives you high praise, it leaves you with a good feeling, and it speaks a lot of the reputation of this company [Alsara Vein Clinic].

Ron Steele

Ron Steele Poster web I had some awful, painful legs. I had circulation not going through my veins, had blockages in the veins. Cause I had this done once before - didn't work. I went through the old way, don't want it.

Couldn’t ride in a car for very long. I had to get out, my leg was heavy. I had to get out of bed and lift my legs. Then I had to stand there a bit so I could get ‘em motivatin’.

And not anymore. I slept good last night - couldn’t believe it. This laser's great. I can sit in a boat now. I don't have to stand up all the time. I can sit down and relax, fish, and mushroom hunt. Just excited I got my legs back. Cause it was gettin' where they gonna take 'em off.

This place is just awesome. He's [Dr. Gupta] a great doctor. I'd recommend him to anybody.

Nitrous Oxide and Needleless Numbing

Beautiful, healthy, pain-free legs may have been a dream in the past, but now they are a reality, thanks to the advances in medicine and technology. Treatments are very safe, effective, and require no downtime.

As icing on the cake, almost all insurers cover treatments of symptomatic varicose veins. Unfortunately, many patients miss this opportunity due to the fear of pain and anxiety.

nitrous oxideWhile we celebrate our three-year anniversary in St. Joseph, I want to take this opportunity to reach all of those patients and their relatives who may have heard about us or even visited us, but were unable to garner enough courage to take the next step.

It is often reasonable to fear pain with a medical procedure, however, the treatments at Alsara Vein Clinic are virtually painless. Many of our patients have graciously shared in their testimonials attesting to that. We go to extreme lengths to make sure that the entire process is comfortable and as pain-free as possible. To help take the edge off a patient's anxiety, a nitrous oxide (laughing gas) option is available for a $30 charge.

At other times, it is not really the fear of pain but rather anxiety that serves as a barrier. Some anxiety is normal and considered an adaptive response. For instance, I suffered from anxiety (or even phobia) when going to an urgent care center for a sore throat or even a well-child visit at the local doctor’s office. I had a deep-seated fear as a child that somehow I would end up in the hospital, like some kids I saw on television, with needles in my arms, struggling to breathe through a mask. In retrospect, this would be considered normal anxiety, as I still made it to the doctors’ offices.

An important step in dealing with anxiety is to substitute it with knowledge. Having a complete understanding of the procedure, how its performed and the numerous ways it would make a difference in your life could help replace fear with hope or even excitement. Sometimes it is the fear of the unknown or recollection of a bad experience in the past that holds patients back.

needleless numbingAt Alsara Vein Clinic, we have performed thousands of procedures that have improved countless lives. Please take a moment to read and listen to our patients’ stories in Testimonials. Many patients who have come to us have had prior treatments elsewhere. Some had painful vein stripping and some had newer treatments, such as sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure), that were unsuccessful or offered only partial relief of symptoms. Remember you have not failed until you have given up!

While understanding the procedure doesn’t help alleviate the anxiety or the fear of needles, there is still hope. We offer in-office anesthetic using nitrous oxide (laughing gas). For our needle-phobic patients, we have the revolutionary J-Tip™ that uses forced air to deliver numbing medicine without the use of needles. You will still be alert enough to enjoy a lollipop and be able to drive yourself back home after the procedure.

Above all, the pampering that you receive at Alsara Vein Clinic remains a secret with us so that you can still attempt to gain all the sympathy from your loved ones when you reach home.

Sclerotherapy Treatments

Sclerotherapy Treatments

Injection Sclerotherapy and Varithena® Vein Treatments

Injection Sclerotherapy is a method of treating varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency using medication that is injected into a vein, causing it to close. Varithena® is a new, cutting-edge treatment option approved by the FDA in 2013. It is one of the most popular and effective treatments available to improve symptoms of superficial venous incompetence and the appearance of visible varicosities. Phlebologist and Sclerotherapy Specialist Dr. Sam Gupta can help diagnose and treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency with a variety of treatment modalities, including Sclerotherapy and Varithena®. Dr. Gupta is certified by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine.

At Alsara Vein Clinic, we treat vein problems all day, every day.

What is Sclerotherapy?

ultrasound guided sclerotherapyUltrasound Guided SclerotherapyInjection Sclerotherapy, also known as Echosclerotherapy, is a method of treating varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency using medication that is injected into a vein, causing it to close. Healthy veins then take over to correct blood flow back to the heart, resulting in symptom improvement. Using ultrasound guidance is essential in achieving long-term results and ensures the most complete treatment of all diseased veins.

How Does This Vein Treatment Process Work?

When the injectable agent comes in contact with the inside lining of the vein, the treated vein collapses and is soon replaced by a thin cord of fibrous tissue. The vein is now permanently closed. This process is called sclerosis, hence the name "sclerotherapy". The treated vein is then slowly absorbed by your body and eventually disappears.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (USGS) is a highly versatile treatment and useful to treat any residual varicose veins that may persist after Endovenous Laser Ablation varicose veins treatment. This ensures comprehensive treatment of the entire diseased network of veins for long-term benefit.

This USGS treatment assumes a major role in the treatment of venous insufficiency, as well as smaller veins, such as telangiectasias and spider veins. USGS is considered the "Gold Standard" for treating spider veins, which are smaller versions of varicose veins that are visible under the skin surface. The success of the sclerotherapy relies upon the experience and skill of the provider. Choosing the right sclerosant, target, volume, concentration, and “exposure time” make the difference between success and failure. Your Vein Specialist at Alsara Vein Clinic is highly skilled in administering USGS treatments.

Varicose Veins Treatment using Varithena®

What is Varithena®?

varithena microfoam treatment for varicose veinsVarithena® is a new, cutting-edge treatment option approved by the FDA in 2013. It is one of the most popular and effective treatments available to improve symptoms of superficial venous incompetence and the appearance of visible varicosities. Administered under ultrasound guidance, it damages the interior lining of the problem vein and causes it to close shut. Over a period of several months, the body will slowly absorb the treated veins by the process of fibrosis.

When is Varithena® recommended?

Varithena® is not used for all forms of varicose veins. It is approved for the treatment of incompetent great saphenous veins, accessory saphenous veins, and visible varicosities of the great saphenous vein (GSV) system above and below the knee. Typically, Varithena® is used for residual varicosities after the truncal veins have been sealed with other treatment modalities such as thermal ablation (EVLA, RFA) or VenaSeal™. Treatments are tailored to individual patients' needs and circumstances. Your Vein Specialist will make the determination for you.

What happens after treatment?

Post-treatment bandages are applied, and compression stockings are used for a minimum of 1 week. It is important to stay active and avoid prolonged inactivity. Also avoid excessively heavy weightlifting, high impact activities, and exposure to heat.

What are the risks involved in the use of Varithena®?

Localized numbness, tenderness, redness, tingling, and bruising are not uncommon. These changes are typically near the injection site and resolve over time.

Alsara Vein Clinic specializes in injection sclerotherapy and Varithena® treatments of varicose veins.

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and Symptoms

During the initial stages of varicose veins, patients usually have mild symptoms, which are experienced more toward the end of the day. The onset of symptoms is often very subtle, so much so that many people forget how their legs felt before they had problems. As the condition worsens, symptoms become more noticeable.

The initial signs and symptoms may include:

  • Aching
  • Burning or numbness
  • Cramping or 'Charley horse'
  • Heaviness
  • Itching
  • Leg pain
  • Restlessness in legs
  • Tiredness
  • Swelling in feet ankles and calves

  • Left untreated, may result in skin discoloration, bleeding veins, sores that heal poorly, and blood clots.

Over time, the symptoms will worsen and could result in skin discoloration, sores, blood clots, frequent skin infections, and bleeding.

It might be surprising to learn that restless leg syndrome, leg cramps, swollen ankles, ulcers, varicose veins, and spider veins could all be symptoms of vein disease. We've helped thousands achieve relief with in-office treatments.

Spiritual Healing and Varicose Veins

As living beings, we are part of the natural world and interdependent. As you rest and renew, you can also better meet the needs of those who depend on you. My sister passed away recently and unexpectedly at the young age of 56. Anyone who has lost a loved one knows the intense sense of loss and emotional pain that is involved in the grieving process. The absence of the person who contributed so much to your life is deeply felt while you bereave. In fact, the term bereavement means “to be deprived of someone through death”.

In pursuit of spiritual healing, my wife and I toured some small, quaint towns nestled in the Himalayan Mountains, also the home of many Buddhist monks. It was then that I realized if you befriend nature, it reciprocates with its timeless beauty and power of healing. From the radiant sun to the ice-cold water of the countless streams and the vibrant colored flowers to the succulent fruits native to the region, one must experience personally to fully appreciate it.

Due credit goes to our energetic and young tour guide, a native to the Himalayan region, who enjoyed narrating history, pausing only when he sensed that his audience in the back seat were napping. He shared stories of his childhood, growing up in a family where his father was a truck driver who had to quit working due to severe recurrent leg cramps and swelling in his legs. Having turned “black and brown”, his legs were set to be amputated by a local surgeon; however, a knowledgeable dermatologist recognized the features of chronic venous insufficiency and actually performed a phlebectomy (removal of veins). Although the legs were saved, his father continues to live with swelling and debilitating leg pain. Over the years, his condition took a toll on the family and his father resorted to alcohol abuse.

Since I was on a retreat to nurture my own spirituality far from the realms of modern medicine that I left behind in America, I maintained silence. Nevertheless, at the conclusion of my trip in the Himalayas, I shared with the tour guide how minimally invasive procedures such as EVLA (endovenous laser ablation) allow us to easily correct the circulatory problems caused by venous insufficiency in the legs. He appeared astonished to hear that a simple, 1-hour procedure could have potentially restored full function to his father’s leg.

dr gupta airport cartoonWhen we are faced with loss, it is sometimes difficult to feel a sense of gratitude in our lives, yet I had another opportunity to recognize the blessings soon after. Upon conclusion of the 10-day trip, as we made our way through the airport security checkpoints, I crossed paths with a security officer who politely asked me to stretch out my arms while he whisked his “magic wand”, checking for any metal items. In doing so, I struck up a casual conversation with him about how busy the airport was and, out of habit, mumbled about the adverse effects of gravity on blood flow in legs. This astute officer was quick to recognize that I was a Physician and appeared eager to know my area of expertise. His eyes lit up when he learned that I specialized in the treatment of venous leg disorders. He shared that his father has severe swelling, tingling sensation, and numbness in his legs that had already caused numerous falls and injuries. I explained how swelling in the legs was the most specific sign of underlying, chronic venous insufficiency. The tingling and numbness experienced in the feet are often caused by the mechanical pressure of the fluid that builds up throughout the day in the legs. I offered him my business card so that he could contact my office for further guidance (and to avoid holding up the security line!). I had never imagined that a 30-second airport security screening could culminate in a varicose vein consultation.

The loss of my sister has brought my family closer together, all with a deeper sense of compassion and appreciation for the loved ones in our lives. Hence, even through loss and grief, the blessings continue. Without grief, there is little appreciation for joy. Although my sister leaves behind a void, her absence has propelled me to a spiritual path for a more meaningful existence. Life is still a beautiful journey after all!

The Revolutionary VenaSeal™ Procedure is Here

venaseal dr-ozVenaSeal™ is a relatively new varicose vein treatment option. Recently featured on The Dr. Oz Show and approved by the FDA, VenaSeal™ involves the use of a medical adhesive (medical grade superglue – cyanoacrylate) that seals the diseased veins from the inside.

Varicose veins are caused when veins in the legs fail, allowing backflow of blood. The blood pools in these veins causing them to enlarge and stretch. These veins occur deep inside the leg, and can only be seen with the help of an ultrasound. The branches of varicose veins pick up the extra volume of blood and may appear under the skin as bluish-green ropy veins or spider veins.

Over the past few decades, treatment options have evolved from aggressive techniques, such as surgical vein stripping, to minimally invasive techniques, such as thermal ablation using a laser (Endovenous Laser Ablation) and Ultrasound Guided (foam) Sclerotherapy.

Almost all modern treatment options work by closing the unhealthy veins from the inside. Once the diseased veins have been successfully sealed shut, the body absorbs them over time, while the flow of blood is restored through healthy veins, improving circulation. These treatments are performed in the comfort of an office setting and do not require any downtime.

Vein Sealed with VenaSeal

VenaSeal™ accomplishes the task of shutting down unwanted veins using medical-grade superglue, cyanoacrylate. Patient comfort is taken to a whole new level with VenaSeal™ while maintaining the high efficacy of treatments such as thermal ablation. It requires only a single injection, sparing patients the unpleasant sensation of multiple needle pricks. There are no large incisions, and only a small application of local anesthesia is necessary, with minimal swelling, no bruising, and zero risks of thermal burns or nerve injury. This allows for fewer visits and increased cost savings. Even better, there may not be a need to wear compression stockings with this procedure. Most insurers, including Medicare, offer coverage for this procedure. Contact Alsara Vein Clinic at 816-396-0245 to set up a Consultation today.

Treatment Process

Treatment Process

On The Day of Your Laser/VenaSeal Treatment Procedure:

vein treatment process medical-shortsWhen you arrive for yourLaser/VenaSeal treatment, you will be asked to change into a pair of comfortable shorts that we provide you. If you choose, you may bring your own loose-fitting shorts.

Next, our vein specialist or our ultrasound technologist may perform a brief ultrasound scan and mark areas of interest on your leg. You are now are ready for our unique multi-step numbing process.

Multi-step Numbing Process

Your comfort is extremely important to us during the vein treatment process. We strive to reduce any discomfort as much as possible. That's why Alsara Vein Clinic has developed an exclusive multi-step numbing process to ensure your comfort every step of the way.

  • 1. Cream

Starting even before your procedure begins, we apply a cream to the skin on your leg. This cream is produced especially for us, and begins the numbing process while preparing your veins for a smooth procedure.

  • 2. Spray

Immediately before any needle touches your skin, we utilize a special spray which further numbs the surface of your skin, further removing any discomfort.

  • 3. Technique

While injecting more numbing medicine into the skin, we use a special technique which numbs the skin area for the next injection. That way, your skin is numbed from outside and in.

  • 4. Lining (Laser treatment only)

Just before the laser is used, we surround the problem vein with a special medicine which numbs, and provides a protective barrier between your vein and the surrounding tissue. Now, numbing is complete, and the laser energy is safely contained right where it needs to be.

Nitrous Oxide "Laughing Gas" (Optional)

laughing gas availableAlthough the vein treatment process offered at Alsara Vein Clinic generally involves little or no pain, we also offer the use of Nitrous Oxide to help take the edge off a patient’s anxiety, helping him or her to relax through the EVLA procedure.

Nitrous Oxide is the oldest, safest, and most fast-acting sedating agent available. It has been used for centuries and is currently used by over one-third of all dental practices.

Patients experience a sense of well-being, feel more relaxed and somewhat less aware of their surroundings, as well as less responsive to any discomfort.

Nitrous oxide is breathed through a nasal mask and, after a state of relaxation is reached, local anesthesia is administered. Complications with nitrous oxide/oxygen are extremely rare. Its sedative effects are completely gone five minutes after it is stopped. It is eliminated through the normal breathing process. Patients are typically able to drive themselves home or to work. This option is available for an additional charge at your EVLA visit.

Needle-free Numbing System (Optional)

no needles during vein treatment process If you are uncomfortable with needles, Alsara Vein Clinic offers a breakthrough needle-free numbing system. Instead of a needle, a pressurized numbing medication is injected through the skin pores using gas pressure.

Laser/VenaSeal Time

enjoy a lollipop during vein treatment process

Laser Procedure:

During the laser procedure, you'll get to wear a super cool pair of protective glasses. As a bonus, we’ll give you a lollipop of your choice. This helps counteract any odd taste or smell, which can be a byproduct of the laser during the procedure that some patients may experience.

Venaseal Procedure:

Since the Venaseal procedure doesn’t involve the use of heat, there is no need for eye protection or dealing with that funny taste or smell. But if you’re feeling left out of the lollipop fun, just ask! We’ve got you covered.

Laser Treatment of Variose Veins

Before You Go Home (or Shopping!)

As soon as your laser treatment is complete, we will obtain some ultrasound images to ensure the target vein was treated successfully (yes, the effect is that fast) and help you with dressing and stockings. You are now good to go back to work (or shopping!)

Home Instructions

We will go over the easy-to-follow instructions before you leave our office.

You are welcome to resume normal activities immediately, including walking, low-impact activities, standing, or lifting moderate weights. In fact, staying active is crucial in keeping your calf muscles (leg pump) working. Now that we have shut down some of the bad veins in your superficial venous system, the good veins in your deep venous system will take over and rely on the pumping mechanism of your calf muscles more than ever before.

Although you are not quite ready for a marathon or heavyweight championship (or our Hot Leg Competition!), you will likely notice improvement as early as the night of the procedure. So go ahead and enjoy your legs!

In case you forgot to ask us something or have any concerns, there is no need to worry. We will call you the day after your procedure to check and see how you are doing and answer any additional questions.

On The Day of Your Non-laser Procedure:

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (USGS) or Spider Treatment

We will offer you a pair of comfortable shorts or you can bring your own loose-fitting shorts. Ultrasound and/or Vein Lite is typically used to identify and mark the areas needing treatment. One or more numbing tools may be used to reduce all possible discomfort. These procedures require less time and preparation than Laser/VenaSeal treatment. Our vein specialist will treat you and determine a follow-up plan. All instructions are provided before you leave the office.

You will receive a follow-up phone call the day after the procedure to check on you and answer any additional questions.

Treatments Are Covered By Insurance, But Time To Act Is Now!

Vein problems cause poor circulation and symptoms like aching, heaviness, tiredness, swelling in feet ankles, and calves, cramping or 'charley horse', and restlessness in legs. Left untreated, the condition continues to advance leading to skin discoloration and infections, blood clots, and sores that heal poorly.

The doctor evaluation and ultrasound scan enable us to confirm that vein treatment will help you. This evaluation and scan along with treatments (if indicated) are covered by almost all insurance companies including Medicare and Medicaid. However, much like all your other doctor visits, copays and deductibles will apply.

Keep in mind that although treatments are virtually painless, safe, and effective, they may require a few visits to allow you some healing time.

So, if you have been procrastinating, face a brand new deductible on January 1, and still want to start the new year with new legs, the time to act is now.

Call for your Free Consultation today. Our staff will guide you through insurance benefits and coverage, so you can be on your way to healthier legs before the end of the year.
