Amanda Stoner

Amanda Stoner Poster web Alsara Clinic has been a great answer to my problems. And I was at my breaking point.

I came to Alsara Clinic because I was having some difficulty with my legs. They were very swollen and itchy and I had tried for two years everything from topical creams, shots, different types of medications, and nothing was getting rid of it. So I came here as a last resort to see if there was anything that Dr. Gupta could do for me.

When I came to Alsara for my mapping experience, I was very excited, and the tech that did my ultrasound was very friendly. When I had my procedure done, the room was very comfortable. I was able to relax and rest, and knowing that the staff was going to take care of me. Dr. Gupta came in and explained the procedure, and it went very well.

Since treatment, I don’t have any of those symptoms at all. I can work my bartending job and be on my feet all day and I don’t get that tired feeling anymore. I don’t have the aches; I don’t have the itching; I don’t have any of those urges anymore. I’m very thankful. And I can walk. The day that it was done, I didn’t stop going to work. I didn’t sit around the house. I stayed active. A week later, it’s like it never happened.

The staff here are amazing. They’re always nice and friendly, above and beyond; whether it was questions or assistance. I was having trouble getting compression socks in St. Joe, so the staff called around to Kansas City, and about the seventh place, they were able to locate a place that I could go to get the supplies that I needed. They could’ve just said, ‘you’re just going to have to order them and wait three or four days’. I didn’t want to have to wait. They go above and beyond, and that starts with your receptionist clear through to the techs, and definitely Dr. Gupta. I’m very blessed to have come here and had the treatment done.

I plan on taking my son to Disneyland next month, and as soon as the other leg heals, I’ll go get some capris and we’re going to go to the beach!

For anybody that has any type of Restless Leg Syndrome, spider veins, varicose veins, swelling, edema, anything, it’s a free consultation so why not try and see if Dr. Gupta can help you. Even for someone without insurance, the treatments are definitely affordable. It’s worth it. It will change your life.

At What Age is Chronic Pain OK?

Gray hair and occasional memory loss may be a normal part of aging, but is living in pain also part of getting older?  I have often wondered if this topic has been researched adequately.  I see many patients who report aches and pains that they have come to accept just because of getting older.

It is true that wear and tear of our joints in the knees, hips, and feet can lead to occasional aches and pains. This is different from chronic pain that is defined as pain experienced daily for over six months.  Yet, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), fifty percent of seniors who live at home say they suffer from chronic pain. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that three-fifths of adults, 65 years and older, have pain that has lasted one year or longer.

A recent patient of mine, Pam, has lived with swelling, pain, and restlessness in her legs for several years. She loves to spend time with her three grandchildren including her beautiful 16-month-old granddaughter, Adeline.  She reported that her legs hurt at different times throughout the day and her ankles would swell up.  She would take breaks to elevate her legs and move them “back and forth” to alleviate the discomfort that was both debilitating and disruptive.   It turns out that Pam had varicose veins that were causing the pooling of blood in her legs.  A simple office-based procedure using laser restored function and eliminated the chronic pain in her legs. There was no downtime or restrictions, so she returned to caring for her grandchildren immediately following her one-hour procedure.

grandmotherModern science and medicine have enabled countless seniors to live free from disease and chronic pain while also prolonging their lives.  However, research has demonstrated that factors such as socializing and relationships are equally important factors for longevity and quality of life.  A small town in Southern London put this finding to test and combined one of the largest retirement homes with a nursery school. This project not only helped bridge the age divide but also infused a new wave of energy, with improved levels of functioning in the elderly who had advanced stages of dementia and physical limitations.

Life expectancy is higher than ever before and an estimated 10,000 people turn 65 each day. While love, family, and our relationships are essential parts of life, chronic pain does not have to be part of our beautiful journey on this planet. Call Alsara Vein Clinic at 816-396-0245 to set up a Consultation today.

Bill Luce

Bill Luce Poster 2 web My name is Bill Luce and I am retired. I spent 45 years teaching to secondary and to college-level standing on my feet a lot.

What were your symptoms? How did they affect your daily life?

Particularly when I was still teaching, I would stand on my feet all day long, and my legs would get very tired and they would cramp in the evening; in fact, sometimes to the point where I couldn’t even sleep at night they were cramping so bad. And it just hurt almost all the time. And, so, my legs felt terrible; they felt heavy. I had some restless leg.

And when I came here, the difference was like night and day. You know, before the treatment, my legs were not in good shape. After I got out of here, they were great! You know, the recovery was almost nil. I was able to walk, I was able to resume my activities. I felt 100% better.

How did you hear about Alsara Vein Clinic?

Let me give one of your employees a little bit of credit: Kati Ussary was one of my students. And I actually… I somehow on Facebook for something, I found that Kati was working here, and so I sent here a message: “What do you think of this place?” And she says “Great!.” “Do you think they could help me?” “Yes!” And she was definitely right.

What was your first impression of Alsara Vein Clinic?

I think from beginning to end, my first impression of this place is that the people were here to help me. So I remember asking Dr. Gupta and the staff here – because I’d had dome prior treatments – “Do you think you can help me?” And he didn’t say anything at first; he examined my legs first, and so forth, and then said “Yes, we can help you.” Through the whole process, I felt that my health was [of] utmost concern, and they were looking after me through the entire process.

I went to Kansas City a couple of times because I’d heard that they were a good place and I did not want to have my leg [veins] stripped. And so I went to Kansas City and they were the injections. I had a couple of treatments down there, but I found them to be of temporary help. They would help for a short period of time and then the pain would resume and I was back to square one. I was a little concerned when I came here because I knew that I’d had those treatments and I didn’t know if it was going to be that much harder or if I was just going to be repeating that process again. But there’s a vast degree of difference between here and down there. People think they have to go to Kansa City to get better healthcare for their legs are completely wrong. You can find it here in St. Joe at this clinic.

How did you feel during and after your treatment?

Oh, I felt fine. There’s another, I guess, misconception some people have that it’s going to be a painful experience – they’re working on your legs and it’s going to be tough, or there’s going to be a long recovery period – and neither one is true. It’s almost completely painless. [You] might feel a little pressure or something but it’s really painless. It’s not that hard at all, and the neat thing is, when you get get up, you’re encouraged to walk, resume your normal activities that very day.

What are you able to do after treatment that you couldn’t do before?

What am I able to do now… I think I can almost do anything that I could do when I was 40 years younger, you know, as far as with my legs. I can walk, I can do anything and not have pain doing it; that’s the key thing. My legs do not cramp. And, so, I feel so much better than I did before I came here. The absence of pain is probably the biggest one. My legs no longer cramp. I no longer have restless leg. I’m able to do what I want to do without any pain. I can walk, ‘cause I love to walk. My legs are as good as new. And that is, to me, everything!

How would you describe Doctor Gupta?

[He is an] extremely intelligent, caring individual. I can’t think of anyone I would want to trust my legs with more than Dr. Gupta. He is a remarkable man. He knows what he’s doing. And he has the knack – I’ve heard this from people who have been here, too – he has the knack of being able to explain your condition to you in common, understandable english. He’s not speak “doctor,” you know, he speaks english to people, and they understand what he is going to do, what the procedure is going to be, and what the expectation will be when he is done, and he’s right.

What is your impression of the staff at Alsara Vein Clinic?

Everyone from top to bottom, everyone’s very friendly here, they’re very knowledgeable. Kati, who did a lot of the Ultrasound work – former student of mine – is, of course, excellent. And everyone here, they have been… I can’t say enough about the staff. They have been very friendly, very helpful, and they’ve answered all the questions that we’ve had.

Tell us more about the various treatments you’ve had at Alsara Vein Clinic?

I’ve had numerous treatments here, and I’ve been pleased with every one of them. And they’ve progressed from, ah… I can mention a couple that I’m more familiar with: the laser treatment [Endovenous Laser Ablation], which was good, and I had the more recent treatment that he’s developed, the [VenaSeal] venous treatment that also was very helpful. Every one of them seemed to work well with less… with almost no time for recovery. I was pleased with every treatment that I’ve had here. And veins are probably an ongoing thing, but I’ve always come in here and Dr. Gupta has been able to treat me with what ever the latest method is. I think that says something for him that he also keeps up on what is going on, and he’s not content with just what is in existence right now, he’s looking ahead to see how he can better treat his patients, and I appreciate that.

Would you recommend Alsara Vein Clinic to others?

Yeah, I would highly recommend this place to anyone who’s having any kind of leg problems. They will be upfront with you, the will tell you what you need, and you can count on them giving you good treatment, and that the staff and Dr. Gupta will do everything they can to make sure your receive the best treatment that’s available for your legs.

My most recent treatment here at Alsara came as a result of me coming with my wife last summer. I was wearing shorts because it was so hot, and Dr. Gupta happened to notice that legs had deteriorated a little bit, that I was beginning to have some bulging in my legs with my veins. He asked how I was feeling and I said ‘I still feel pretty good but, yeah, they are beginning to bulge, beginning to show a little bit’ and he said ‘You know, we can take care of that’. And so that’s when the most recent treatment started, after I came in with my wife and Dr. Gupta just happened to notice what my legs looked like. I didn’t… they felt… compared to what they felt like originally, they were still a lot better, nearly 100%. But afterwards, a-ha, I had no idea, they were even better, totally 100% better, and they looked better. My wife and other people have noticed when I wear shorts that my legs are far more natural. They look like they should. The swelling has gone down. My veins don’t pop out like they did. It’s almost like my legs have been set on redial from 40 years ago. You guys have restored my leg health. I mean, I can’t say enough. That’s why I am more than happy to do this because I do feel they’re 100% better like I said in that first commercial.

Probably my most recent referral was some dear friends of ours who had… He really had trouble with his legs. He could no longer walk. The swelling of legs was tremendous. He had difficulty getting around. He could not walk very well. He had been to various places to get treatment, including Mayo and other places, and he had been told that that was just the way it was, you know, to exercise more, do some physical therapy, and it would improve on its own. And his health began to deteriorate. He still had trouble walking around. Going up stairs was nearly impossible for him. If he would go to a store or something, he had to have one of the portable wheelchairs or motor carts that they have to go around the store – he had to have that. And he had almost given up all hope, They were even talking about moving and closing their business down and so forth because his legs were in that bad of shape. And he came here and the treatment was remarkable. That very day that he got out, he went to one of our bigger department stores here in town – two of them actually – and walked clear around both. And I said ‘Well, how’d you feel?’ and he said ‘Well, my feet were not used to walking that much but that was it. My legs felt fine.’ And so he was really very, very happy that he came here, and he received exactly the treatment that he needed for his legs.

My wife, who also was beginning to have some problems with her legs in terms of cramping and not feeling as good, she came here. In fact, we were kind of a one-two into the office here, and she has had the treatments and is also feeling much, much better. She’s a 100% better just like me. She found the treatments to be painless and she was able to resume her activities that very day. So she is feeling grateful and a lot better as well.

I have recommended several people come here. I can tell you this: everyone that I have recommended this place to who has come here has had a positive experience. They, too, have been helped. It’s not just me, they have also been helped. Their legs feel better. And they range in age from, oh, the youngest maybe in their ‘40s all the way up to one lady who was in her early ‘90s who came here, and this clinic was able to help her.

Complications of Untreated Varicose Veins

Veins are “pipes” that are responsible for returning blood to the heart. Varicose Veins are damaged, swollen, enlarged veins that do not work properly allowing blood to pool in legs.

Veins in the legs are far from the heart and must work against the force of gravity to pump blood back towards the heart. Heredity is a common risk factor making veins prone to weakness and failure. Other risk factors include age, pregnancies, prolonged sitting or standing, and history of trauma or clots in legs.

Complications of Untreated Varicose Veins

  • Blood Clot

    Blood Clot

Compromised blood flow and inflammation can cause superficial thrombophlebitis. Patients may experience redness of the skin, increased tenderness and swelling.
  • Spontaneous Bleeding

    Spontaneous Bleeding

Varicose veins cause increased pressure of blood in the veins and fragile skin over time. Terminal branches of veins are pushed closer to the skin surface. This is a perfect setup for spontaneous bleeding. Even a slight scratch can lead to profuse bleeding that is usually painless. Patients may lose a significant amount of blood very quickly.
  • Hyperpigmentation

    Hyperpigmentation

Left untreated, varicose veins cause increased pressure of pooled blood in leg veins. Fluid leaks out of these veins and may result in painful swelling and discoloration of skin known as hyperpigmentation. Inflammation of skin may cause severe itching, burning and redness.
  • Lipodermatosclerosis

    Lipodermatosclerosis

Continued inflammation of the skin over time causes the skin to become firm and leathery. Patients feel increased tenderness of the skin. The stiffening and hardening of the skin is known as Lipodermatosclerosis.
  • Venous Leg Ulcer

    Venous Leg Ulcer

Long-standing venous hypertension causes damage to the skin which eventually breaks down to form an ulcer. These ulcers do not heal well and may cause itching, bleeding and infection. In rare cases, infection could lead to serious conditions such as osteomyelitis (infection of the bone) or sepsis (blood poisoning).

Varicose veins are typically located deep inside the leg and may not be visible from the outside. Initially, the symptoms include leg pain, tiredness, heaviness, itching, throbbing, or burning sensation in the legs. These symptoms are usually worse at the end of the day after a person has been sitting or standing for long periods of time and are usually better upon first getting out of bed. The recurrent increased pressure of blood in leg veins allows leakage which can cause swelling in the legs. The build-up of deoxygenated toxin-rich blood in muscles makes them prone to cramping and restlessness in legs. There is a higher risk of clot formation and bleeding that can be profuse.

Continued increased pressure of blood in the leg veins causes changes to the skin that are typically noticed in the mid-calf to the ankle area. This condition, known as stasis dermatitis, is characterized by severe itching and redness of the skin followed by hyperpigmentation (discoloration of the skin due to deposition of iron pigments). This is followed by induration (thickening of the skin) and dermal fibrosis (scar tissue): a condition known as Lipodermatosclerosis. There may be atrophie blanche (smooth, ivory-white plaques surrounded by hyperpigmentation). The final stages of chronic venous insufficiency are related to the breakdown of skin and the formation of poorly healing leg ulcers (sores). There is a higher risk of local skin infection (cellulitis), sepsis (blood poisoning), and osteomyelitis (infection of the bone).

Over the past few decades, extensive research has allowed us a much better understanding of the causes of leg ulcers. We now know that majority of ulcers in the legs are venous (varicose veins). Venous leg ulcers account for about 80% of all leg ulcers. These ulcers are typically painless unless there is an infection on top of the leg ulcer or physical irritation that can cause pain. Fortunately, we also have technology such as laser (Endovenous Laser Ablation) that allow us to treat the underlying problem at its source in a minimally invasive manner.

Vein treatments are safe, effective, virtually painless, and do not require any downtime. Your Vein Specialist at Alsara Vein Clinic has performed over 25,000 treatments and helped countless patients some of whom came with prior failed treatments or no hope that anything could be done. Clinical Notes:

Dona is an "active" female who came to us in a wheelchair. She has lived with ulcers in both of her legs for several years. She has received wound care for numerous years without long-term relief; ulcers and skin infections became recurrent problems for her. She has also lived with substantial leg swelling, leg cramps and extreme sensitivity to touch. She has restless leg syndrome and was prescribed medications, such as Requip. Still, the discomfort in her legs (at night) remained.

She received endovenous laser ablation of the "leaky" (refluxing) axial veins in both legs at Alsara Vein Clinic in Spring 2018. By the start of Summer 2018, the ulcers in her legs had completely healed. The swelling is almost nonexistent and, for the first time in several years, she can enjoy pain-free legs both during the day and at night.

Finding Happiness in Troubled Times

A recent survey, conducted by the National Science Foundation, reported that Americans are the unhappiest they’ve been in 50 years. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns, economic instability, and political unrest are enough to overwhelm anyone.

But how does one boost their level of happiness amidst a relentless pandemic? I believe that there are ways to stay healthy and achieve fulfillment in life if we focus on our priorities. I present to you, arguably, the two most important factors backed by science to help navigate through tumultuous times.

Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Harvard University conducted the longest study of adults for clues to leading healthy and happy lives. Analysis of the data collected over the course of 80+ years revealed startling information. Researchers reported that our relationships and how happy we are in our relationships have a powerful influence on our health.

robertwaldingerIn his TED talk, Robert Waldinger, Director of the Harvard Study, states that many people tend to think that fame, fortune, and hard work will bring them happiness. The study found that social connections are the most important factor responsible for our well-being. Numerous other equally surprising correlations came out of this study, such as people’s level of satisfaction with their relationships at age 50 was a better predictor of physical health than their cholesterol levels were, and that marital satisfaction has a protective effect on mental health.

Waldinger stated in his TED talk, “Good relationships don’t just protect our bodies; they protect our brains”.  He reported that those who kept warm relationships were found to live longer and happier while the loners tended to die earlier.

Take Care of Your Health

Many people are delaying their medical care waiting for normalcy to return, which is actually nowhere in sight. Another report indicated that 80% of adults are concerned about catching the Covid-19 virus in the emergency room and avoid seeking care, even during an emergency.

Several studies have shown that being happy has a positive impact on our health, correlating to a 13-26% reduction in the risk of heart disease., ,  One doesn’t need scientific evidence to recognize that happiness can be elusive in absence of good health. In fact, the constitution of the World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”.

At an organic level, we are composed of countless cells, each performing a function while subject to growth, repair, and replacement within our body. Cells form tissue that in turn form organ systems such as skin, brain, and the vascular system.

Food is necessary for the cell to function, hence a person needs to have a balanced diet. Likewise, adequate sleep, regular exercise, and management of stress ensure proper bodily functions. The slightest breakdown in one part of our body can adversely affect various organ systems, interfering with our ability to enjoy a fulfilling happy life. Breakdown in the venous system in our legs is no exception to the interconnectedness.

Although vein problems affect almost half of the adult population, there are many who are living with heaviness in their legs, chronic fatigue, leg cramps, and restlessness in their legs but unaware of the association.

Discomfort in the legs and the inability to get a restful sleep at night due to restless leg syndrome has a compounding effect leading to a further reduction in the ability to stay active. Reduction in the activity of the calf pump leads to worsening of chronic venous insufficiency. One can see how this forms a self-perpetuating cycle leading to the deterioration of overall health and feeling of well-being.

sherlock blood clotTo make matters worse, patients are unable to make a correlation between veins and their symptoms often confusing spider veins with the diseased veins present deep inside the leg responsible for chronic venous insufficiency. Left untreated, the condition continues to worsen and may manifest as frequent skin infections (cellulitis), profuse bleeding, poorly healing sores in the legs, and life-threatening blood clots.

Gone are the days of painful vein stripping with prolonged recovery times. The latest treatment options such as Laser ablation, Varithena, and the revolutionary Venaseal (medical superglue) are minimally invasive, safe, and very effective. There is minimal to no discomfort during the procedures and there is no downtime. You can start the New Year with healthy, pain-free beautiful legs.

Always remember that life is a beautiful journey… and you will need your legs for it!

Gisela Linn Poster web I came here a year ago, showed everybody my ugly legs – hah! And I made an appointment, and Dr. Gupta and staff worked on it. It was a year ago, and I had – oh my goodness – I had pain for 64 years because I had the [varicose] veins when I was 10.

I started having very bad varicose veins. And so they did the laser treatment on both legs, and immediately I felt relief. So, ever since, I have more energy. I do more things. My husband likes me better. I’m not as grouchy from the pain. Restless Leg Syndrome is gone. I can watch a whole movie for two or three hours without getting… fidgeting back and forth – my legs – and so on.

I just feel really blessed at this time in my life that I have legs that I can… that have no pain.

My husband says ‘What’s wrong with you?’ for forty-some years. It was miserable. It really was. It’s just… driving to Kansas City and home, my legs would be swelled up so bad, it takes three days for the swelling to go down.

At the Alsara Vein Clinic, it’s very comfortable to come in to. The girls that work here are very friendly – always have been. Dr. Gupta is absolutely the best doctor I’ve ever met. Ha! Bedside manners plus! I don’t feel anything when he works on it. He’s very conscientious. The girls are very conscientious. It’s a pleasure to come here.

Oh, I would recommend everyone that has vein problems, I would recommend go to Alsara Clinic and get your treatment. You feel so much better. Your life will change a hundred percent.

Katrina Brown

Katrina Brown poster My name is Katrina Brown. I enjoy spending time with my family. I enjoy walking - even more so now that I’ve had treatment on my legs.

What were your symptoms? How did they affect your daily life?

Before I had treatment, I was having restless legs at night. I hadn’t even realized how tired my legs were until after the treatment. I was having heavy, tired legs and just feeling the need to move my legs at night, just readjusting a lot as I was trying to fall asleep. Just the heaviness, the achiness, um, a lot of swelling after a day of activity when I didn’t have a chance to put my feet up and rest. I had some obvious varicose veins that I was concerned about.

How did you hear about Alsara Vein Clinic?

I’d seen a commercial about vein treatment, and so I just made a mental note to ask my Nurse Practitioner the next time I saw her, and she’s like 'Oh, yes, we can get that looked at'. And she referred be to Dr. Gupta.

What was your first impression of Alsara Vein Clinic?

After I came and saw Dr. Gupta and Kati and everyone for the consultation, I really liked the clinic. Everyone was very friendly. The clinic was nicely decorated, it’s pretty, and it smells good, and it’s always so calm and peaceful here. I really enjoy coming here… which sounds strange to say you really enjoy going for a medical treatment, but it’s just a nice, pleasant atmosphere.

How did you feel during and after your treatment?

I’ve had the laser treatment and the Varithena®. With the laser treatment, I don’t remember there being any pain. They do numb your leg as the procedure’s done – I mean, not your whole leg; it won’t be numb. They numb inside of the vein. And after the Varithena®, I didn’t feel anything. There was nothing whatsoever. Probably the most uncomfortable part was just wearing the stockings, and that’s so not a big deal. I have very sensitive skin and I get itchy from a band aid or a piece of tape, so, probably just the little band aid on there was the most irritating thing, ha!

Dr. Gupta does a good job of giving analogies to explain how your leaky veins affect the rest of your body, how it can affect your health long-term, and how – even if you can see and feel the problem – it could be lurking 'behind the walls' is what he would say! And the treatment was pretty much painless. Everyone made everything very clear before they did anything. Kati was very good at explaining what was going to happen and what she was doing. And as you’re getting the procedure, you’re able to see on the screen what Kati and Dr. Gupta are looking at and what’s taking place.

What are you able to do after treatment that you couldn’t do before?

I know for sure that I’m so much more active since I’ve gotten the treatment. And the swelling that I use to have before in my legs at the end of the day – if I was up doing anything at all, my legs would be so swollen by the end of the day that it would feel tight, and I would be just exhausted… like, I was ready for the day to be over. And now, the swelling has greatly changed – there’s not all that swelling in my legs at the end of the day. And it really helps me feel like you can go ahead and do something else the next day. You’re not going to be having to recover from a day of activity with a day of rest.

Now I feel like I can spend a whole day out shopping and running around without having to take time out to rest and put your feet up so that I’m not having swelling all day. I’m a lot more comfortable as I go about the things I do. Since I’ve had treatment, I’ve been able to walk; I’ve increased my walking between just my daily activities plus my exercise. I’ve been getting between five and seven miles of walking in a day, so I have so much more energy. I’m not flopping around like a fish at night anymore, ha hah!

I had two or three long veins that were visibly bulging, and now I can’t see those at all, so that’s great, ha! My legs look a lot better, for sure.

How would you describe Doctor Gupta?

Dr. Gupta is very friendly. I get the feeling that he’s probably a very good host when he has friends and family to his home because he’s always offering drinks, and he’s very good at simplifying things and putting them in basic, understandable terms. He always has an analogy for everything, and he takes the time to show you on the screen what he’s doing and why, and explain how this is good for your overall health in the long-term.

What is your impression of the staff at Alsara Vein Clinic?

The staff is wonderful. The first person I met was Kati, and she is amazing. She’s always calm and she’s really good at making you feel relaxed by caring on casual conversation. I felt like she was a friend as soon as I met her. She’s a hard worker. She really takes the time to make people feel comfortable. I was actually here one of the first days that Mia (Front Office Coordinator) came to work, which was pretty neat to see a new person on staff, and it was kinda fun to watch her as she’s progressed over the last few months working here.

How was your insurance coverage?

Insurance covered everything 100%. I believe my Nurse Practitioner checked to make sure that my insurance was accepted at Alsara, and there was never any problem. I believe they got pre-approval before any of the procedures, and I’ve never receive a bill or anything.

Would you recommend Alsara Vein Clinic to family or friends?

I would definitely recommend Alsara Vein Clinic. And I have recommended to my sister, my aunt, my grandmother that they come here. And actually, my first visit, I brought my mom along with me because I thought ‘Hey, we could make a day of it, go shopping, go out to eat’. And, we got to looking at the pictures, watching the video, and reading the information, and I said ‘Mom, I think you need treatment as well’. And she decided that that might be what was wrong with her legs. She’d been [previously] treated for several other medical conditions for her legs that the treatments never seemed successful. So I think, at the time, the doctors were looking at different issues and those weren’t her particular issues. So my mom did end up speaking to Dr. Gupta and he did the test on her, and she ended up pursuing treatment as well.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

My grandfather was a postal employee for many years and he always walked his route. As he got older, he had problems with his legs, and we were never really sure what the issue was. They got so bad that they ended up becoming infected, and he was in a wound hospital for several months. And after coming here to Alsara Vein Clinic, I realized by looking at the pictures that they had here that his medical condition probably was varicose veins that had went untreated for a year.

I had never really considered it a problem until I saw the commercial and realized it was a medical problem, not just a problem of wanting your legs to look good in the summer time. And when I saw the commercials, I realized ‘Oh, this might be an issue’. As I explored the issue further, after I came here for treatment, I realized that this was a medical issue for several people in both sides of my family.

I do wish I’d known about Alsara Vein Clinic and varicose vein treatment sooner. I feel like my legs are doing really well now, but there’s people in my family that I wish I could have told them about it sooner, and gotten treatment a lot sooner. I feel like mine happened just at the right time, but there are other people that I would like to have told even years ago.

Kristal Cole

Kristal Cole Poster web I am a Dietary Manager. I work a lot of hours. I’m on my feet constantly, all day long. I have a couple of daughters.

Oh gosh, I had, like... working all day long on the concrete, coming home at night, restless leg syndrome; couldn’t sleep, always kicking. Long car rides, short car rides – I couldn’t sit still because it was just unbearable. But, now, it’s been like a total game-changer. Oh, like the heaviness, the achiness – it’s so much better now.

I actually was going to go to Kansa City to go to the ‘closest one,’ and I came home one night, tired, watching TV, and you guys had a commercial on, so I called you the next day.

From the beginning to the end, everything’s been great. You have a great staff; just very kind, willing to work with you. Your scheduling, everything, was just fantastic.

[I was] nervous at first, ‘cause you don’t know what you’re going in to and if it’s going to help. But everything was just, like, you guys put me at ease. You explained everything. Dr. Gupta, like, explained everything detail-to-detail, like, ‘the plumbing and how it works,’ and I just love that part about it. Everything was a great experience, and I’m still looking forward to getting cosmetic [treatment] from you guys, so that’s my next step.

[Now], I can go on long care rides without it bothering me. I can work a little bit longer hours without being totally exhausted and my legs aching and killing me. I go home, I’m, like, able to do things at home for a couple hours, and then sit down and relax.

I’m more jovial now; I was before, but before [my leg problems]. When you’re in a lot of pain, you’re just, like, on edge sometimes. You don’t feel good. But it’s really changed my attitude. I’m more happier now. I’m not in a lot of pain. I feel like I used to, like, ten years ago. I should have had it done ten years ago – ha, ha, ha! I thought, ‘I’m too young for this!’ But, yeah, it’s been a blessing. It’s been great.

[Dr. Gupta], he’s great. He’s so caring. He explains everything detail-to-detail, and if he says it once he’ll tell you again. He’ll just explain it, explain it, until you understand what’s going on. He’ll walk you right through it. So, he’s great.

You guys have a great staff; very great, very caring. You guys were very friendly; a very clean environment; all around great experience; very professional. I’ve told people at work, like, some of the girls have the same problems. I’m, like, ‘I guarantee you’ll be, like, happy and it will be worth it.’ So, absolutely, I would absolutely recommend you guys.

I appreciated the cards that you guys sent me, like when I lost my daughter, and stuff like that, that was very kind-hearted. I did not expect that, so, you guys are great to work with and be around. And you feel that when you come in, like, you feel like you are part of, like, the community. You are good people. I’m glad I found you guys, ha, ha, ha!

President Trump – Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)

President Donald Trump was recently diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI). His diagnosis has sparked renewed interest in this common yet often overlooked condition. Many patients are now asking important questions: What is CVI? Is it serious? Who gets it? How is it treated? Let’s dive right in.

What is CVI?

RefluxingVeinAnimation smChronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a medical condition in which the veins in the legs don’t function properly, making it difficult to pump blood back to the heart. This leads to circulation problems and a variety of leg symptoms.

In the early stages, symptoms may be subtle such as heaviness, fatigue, aching, throbbing, itching, or burning in the legs. As the condition progresses, due to inadequate blood flow to calf muscles patients may experience leg cramps (often called “Charley horses”) or restlessness at night (Restless Leg Syndrome).

Without treatment, CVI can worsen and lead to leg swelling, skin discoloration, bleeding varicose veins, recurrent skin infections, blood clots and poorly healing sores (ulcers)

Progression of Varicose Veins

How Common is CVI?

CVI is extremely common, affecting 10–35% of adults in the U.S. Both men and women are at risk, but women often develop symptoms earlier due to pregnancies and hormonal changes. In fact, nearly 40% of women over age 50 have some degree of CVI.

Risk factors include family history of vein disease, age and prolonged standing or sitting

Treatment of CVI

In the past, treatment for CVI often required invasive vein stripping surgery in a hospital, followed by a long and painful recovery. Thankfully, modern medicine has transformed vein care.

Today, CVI can be treated in the comfort of an office setting with minimally invasive procedures. Diseased veins are safely closed, restoring healthy circulation. Patients typically return to normal activities immediately with no downtime, and minimal discomfort. Many notice improvements in their legs as soon as the next day.

A quick, painless duplex ultrasound can diagnose CVI, and your vein specialist will review personalized treatment options. Almost all insurance plans including Medicare cover treatment of symptomatic vein disease.

Varicose veins are a common cause of secondary RLS

Jumping can be good... as long as you have control over it!

restless legs syndrome jumping

restless legs rls

Varicose veins are a common cause of secondary RLS (restless leg syndrome). For those who have varicose veins, the symptoms of restlessness in legs center on the fact that leg muscles and tissue are not getting enough oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood. That "pins-and-needles" feeling is their body's way of telling them they need more blood flowing through their legs, and it creates an urge to move, making it difficult to sleep at night. In addition to cramps ("Charley horse") and restlessness in the legs, varicose vein sufferers may also notice heaviness, excessive tiredness, and aching in the legs. Left untreated the underlying venous insufficiency (pooling of blood in legs) may cause swelling, clots, and sores.

Primary Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Some patients have Primary RLS (restless leg syndrome). This means that the cause is unknown. In addition to varicose veins, there are other secondary causes of RLS including iron deficiency anemia, kidney failure, side effects of certain medications (such as medications used to control depression), peripheral neuropathy, and dehydration (inadequate fluid intake or caffeine intake).

restless leg syndrome specialist doctor st joseph moIf you experience restlessness in your legs, consult with a Vein Specialist to see if varicose veins may be the cause. A duplex ultrasound examination in the comforts of the office setting can help determine if varicose veins are present.

Treatment of varicose veins may alleviate the symptoms of RLS (restless leg syndrome). One study found that 98% with RLS (restless leg syndrome) and varicose veins noted improvement after treatment of varicose veins with sclerotherapy.* Newer treatments such as endovenous laser ablation are more effective than sclerotherapy and offer longer-term solutions. The use of medications to mask symptoms of RLS (restless leg syndrome) may cause side effects without addressing the underlying cause. Other ways to manage symptoms of restlessness in the legs include calf exercises, weight loss, and the use of graduated compression stockings.

Restless Legs - Varicose Veins may be responsible for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Many patients now recognize that varicose veins may not be visible from the outside. Most of our patients report experiencing tiredness, cramping (charley horse), restlessness, or swelling in the legs. Those whose condition has not reached one of the advanced stages often wonder if they are at increased risk of anything that could be limb or life-threatening.

At least one-third of our patients clearly have signs of advanced venous insufficiency – when varicose veins have progressed to a point where the chronic pooling of blood (stasis) in the legs causes skin changes. They may notice skin discoloration, thickening or hardening of the skin, recurrent skin infections, bleeding that can be profuse, and poorly healing sores in the legs. In addition, varicose veins may be an early warning sign of potentially deadly blood clots.

We routinely see patients with blood clots. Some are referred by their primary care providers and others present themselves with concerns about blood clots. Yet there are many patients who are surprised to find that they have a blood clot when we examine them using duplex ultrasound.

Introduction

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs to alleviate discomfort, ranging from aching and throbbing to itching and crawling sensations.2 Articulating these sensations can be challenging for some patients.

Who gets it?

Initially documented in 1945, RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease3, was reported to affect around 5% of the population. Recent studies, however, indicate a prevalence ranging from 3% to 15%. It tends to occur more frequently in women, with a nearly 2:1 female-to-male ratio. As age advances, there is a positive correlation with RLS prevalence. Genetics plays a role, as up to 25% of first-degree relatives of individuals with RLS report similar symptoms.4

Connecting Varicose Veins and RLS

Even in the 1940s, when Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) was first identified, Dr. Ekbom suggested that venous disease could be a potential cause. However, it took around fifty years to firmly establish this connection. A groundbreaking 1995 study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery treated 113 individuals with restless legs and ultrasound-confirmed vein disease using sclerotherapy.5 Surprisingly, 98% of participants reported immediate relief. Subsequent studies have consistently supported this link, uncovering RLS symptoms in individuals with primary and recurrent varicose veins1. Addressing superficial venous insufficiency has proven effective in alleviating RLS symptoms for most patients. Nonetheless, it's essential to acknowledge that certain conditions, including iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy, kidney failure, various neurological conditions, and specific medications, can also contribute to RLS symptoms.

Explaining the connection

Impaired venous blood return in the legs, particularly in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), may drive the subconscious urge to move the legs (RLS), forcing you to use your muscles that help pump blood back to the heart. Inflammation associated with CVI could lead to overactive nerves, intensifying the situation. Nighttime leg cramps and pain, often linked to varicose veins, can further disrupt sleep, aggravating leg restlessness.

Determining if Varicose Veins might be responsible for Restless Legs

A straightforward and noninvasive duplex ultrasound in your Vein Specialist’s office can identify any underlying venous issues. The Vein Specialist will review a treatment strategy if venous insufficiency is found. Typically, the affected veins are closed using one of the FDA-approved treatment modalities to reroute blood flow through healthier veins.6

Conclusion

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a common issue often linked to varicose veins. You might also be encountering other symptoms of varicose veins and associated venous insufficiency, including sensations of heaviness, fatigue, aching, cramping, and swelling in the legs. If left untreated, the condition can worsen, leading to potential complications such as blood clots, bleeding, frequent skin infections, and slow-healing sores. Medications for RLS, such as Ropinirole and Pramipexole, may mask the symptoms without addressing the underlying problem.
